Air Force selected for Cheez-It Bowl vs. Washington State

Falcons (10-2, 7-1 MW) take on Washington State (6-6, 3-6, Pac-12), Friday, Dec. 27, at 8:15 p.m. MT at Chase Field in Phoenix
Air Force has been selected to play in the Cheez-It Bowl on Friday, Dec. 27, at 8:15 p.m. MT at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix, Ariz. The Falcons will take on Washington State (6-6, 3-6 Pac-12) from the Pac-12 Conference.
The 24th-ranked Falcons are playing in a bowl game for the first time since 2016, the 10th time under head coach Troy Calhoun and the 27th time overall in program history. Air Force has a 12-13-1 all-time bowl record, including a 4-5 mark under Calhoun.
This will be Air Force's second game against a Power 5 team this season and second vs. a Pac-12 foe, as the Falcons defeated Colorado, 30-23, in overtime in Boulder Sept. 14. The Falcons are 4-9 vs. Power 5 teams since 2003. Air Force will be playing a Pac-12 team in a bowl game for the first time since taking on California in the 2015 Armed Forces Bowl, resulting in a 55-36 win by the Bears. The Falcons are 19-28-2 all-time against the Pac-12.
Air Force is nationally ranked for the first time since 2010, ranking 24th in this week's polls. The Falcons are 24th in the Associated Press poll with 97 points and 24th in the USA Today Coaches poll with 151 points. Air Force is ranked in consecutive weeks for the first time since the week of Oct. 16 in 2010 when the program was ranked 23rd in each poll. This season marks the first since 1998 the program is ranked heading into bowl season.
Air Force completed the regular season with a 10-2 overall record. The Falcons finished second in the Mountain West Mountain Division with a 7-1 mark. The Falcons have a seven-game winning streak, the program's longest in one season since 1998 when the team won eight straight. The seven-game winning streak is tied as the sixth longest overall in program history.
Air Force is the nation's third most-improved team this season, with a five-game turnaround from 2018. Louisville, Georgia State, Baylor, SMU and Western Kentucky also have a +5 improvement this season. Only Navy and Central Michigan's seven-game improvement is better.
Air Force's 10 wins ties as the third-most in program history, trailing the 12 wins in 1985 and 1998. The team's 10-2 mark is tied for the fourth-best in program history, trailing the 9-0-2 mark in 1958 and 12-1 marks in 1985 and 1998.
