Scottie pours in 25 and Swan adds 17 points and 16 rebounds.
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Air Force men's basketball (10-14, 5-7) dropped a tough 77-72 Mountain West game UNLV (13-11, 7-5) Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center. The Falcons were led by juniors Lavelle Scottie and Ryan Swan, who combined for 42 points in the setback.
The Falcons had just rallied back from a seven point deficit to take a one point lead with 59 seconds left in the game. A bucket by Scottie and back-to-back three's--first by Chris Joyce and a go-ahead three from AJ Walker--had the Falcons up 72-71 with 59 second left.
UNLV then took the lead on free throws by Noah Robotham with 26 seconds left. Robotham was able to get a rebound off a missed three to draw the foul.
After the Rebels extended the lead to three with two more free throws, the Falcons had a chance to tie the game with the ball and nine second left. The Falcons were forced into a off-balanced three point attempt by Caleb Morris and UNLV rebounded the ball. The Rebels capped the game with two more free throws.
Scottie scored a game-high 25 points shooting 12 of 18 from the field. The junior has scored 59 points in his last two games.
Swan notched his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Swan went 7 of 11 from the field and had five offensive rebounds. He also led the team with four assists.
Walker scored 14 points, adding three assists. The freshman reached double figures for the sixth straight game.
Joyce came off the bench to add 11 points. The sophomore connected on 3 of 5 three's, adding three assists and five rebounds.
Amauri Hardy led UNLV with 24 points. Nick Blair added 13 points and Robotham scored 12.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field. Air Force shot 50.8 percent from the field, while UNLV shot 50. The Falcons out-rebounded the Rebels 33-29. The biggest discrepancy for the Falcons were points on turnovers, which UNLV held a 21-10 advantage.
Air Force led 40-36 at halftime. UNLV came back with the aid of seven made three's in the second half.
Air Force returns to action Saturday, Feb. 16, at Utah State. The game tips at 2:05 pm MT and will be broadcast by the Mountain West Network.
