Air Force men's and women's tennis swept Army West Point in a double-dual Saturday afternoon as part of College MatchDay at the USTA Campus in Orlando, Fla. Both teams rallied back from early deficits as the men's team won 4-2 and the women won 4-3.
On the women's side, the Falcons also rallied back from a 1-0 deficit for the 4-3 win. The Falcons out-dueled the Black Knights in singles 4-2 for the win. Senior Liz Barnickel won a pair of 7-6 tiebreakers at No. 2 singles over Caroline Vincent for the match point.
TJ Fumagalli won at No. 1 singles over Ana Joyner 6-3, 6-3. Meredith Jones won at No. 3 singles over Kirby Einck 6-2, 7-6. Nadeen Lieberman won at No. 6 singles over Sam DiMaio 6-4, 6-4.
"Wow, what a match," Air Force women's tennis head coach Kim Gidley said. "Army gave us a battle and everything we could handle. They got the momentum by winning the doubles point. But we came back in singles to win in straight sets at No. 6, 1 and 3 to even it. Elizabeth, our senior, came back to win her first set at No. 2 singles gave us some momentum. Despite being down 4-1, 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set, she came back again. She has worked so hard the past three and half years to get to this point. She was so composed and such a great fighter to clinch the match for us. This was team tennis at its best!"
"Having the USTA host us here with the venue, the atmosphere, the fans and some former players from 20-years ago that wanted to come to this, this grows tennis and makes it a fun sport with the men and women playing at the same time," Gidley added.
On the men's side, after dropping the doubles point, the Falcons went 4-1 in singles play to rally to the win. The Falcons got wins at No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 singles slots for the win. Senior Luke Sanderson earned the fourth point with his three-set win over David Mitchell at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Patrick Sklenka won at No. 1 singles over Myles Conlin, 6-4, 7-6. A pair of freshmen won at 5 and 6 for the Falcons. Robert Baylon won at No. 5 over David Gorshein, 6-2, 6-0. James Scotty won at No. 6 over Anant Mundra, 6-1, 6-2.
Air Force's lone doubles win came a No. 1 doubles, with Sklenka and Tadhg Collins defeating Myles Conlin/Nikita Larichev 6-3.
"That was an amazing college match and something I've never been a part of before, a double-dual with men and women and just to have the support of the fans and alumni," said Air Force men's head coach Dan Oosterhous. "These are two American teams competing against each other, it was so special. Either team could have won, we were very fortunate."
"The USTA National Campus did a great job as a host. Everything was prepared for us so we could focus on our players. When our players came on the court, they were rested and they were ready. It was a great experience for us."
The Falcon men's team improves to 8-4 on the season. The women's team improved to 12-0, trying the program's best start ever.
