Wrestling Wraps Up Regular Season at Northern Colorado

The Falcons are looking to cap off a winning dual season

THIS WEEK: The Air Force Academy wrestling team wraps up the 2018-19 regular season Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24, when it heads up the road to take on Northern Colorado in Big 12 dual action. The match between the Falcons and Bears in Greeley will get underway at 2 p.m. MT.
FOLLOWING THE ACTION: The dual will streamed for free online on Pluto TV. Live results will also be available through Track. Fans can also follow along on Twitter, @AFAWrestling.
LAST TIME OUT: The Falcons had a 1-1 Big 12 conference dual weekend in its final home events of the year, falling to Oklahoma, 31-9, before knocking off Utah Valley, 25-17, on Senior Night. Air Force got wins from freshman heavyweight Kayne Hutchison (9-4 decision) and senior Alex Mossing (Pin 3:57) against the Sooners.On Senior Night versus UVU, the Falcons used the strength of four bonus point wins and a forfeit to take the match over the Wolverines.The two teams actually split the matches, 5-5, but with a pin from Mossing at 157 lbs., a technical fall from junior Alec Opsal at 149 lbs., and major decisions from senior John Twomey at 133 lbs. and junior Garrett O'Shea at 141 lbs., the Falcons were able to prevail in team points. Air Force also took a forfeit win at 125 lbs.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THE BEARS: Sunday will mark the 31st all-time meeting between the long time in-state rivals. Since their first meeting back in 1976, AF leads the tally, 18-12. The Falcons have won three straight in the series, including a 27-6 drubbing last season at Clune Arena.
LAST SEASON VS. UNC: Air Force won eight of ten bouts on its way to a commanding 27-6 win in the season finale against Northern Colorado. The dual was highlighted by a pin at 141 lbs. from then sophomore Alec Opsal.
THREE FALCONS IN COACHES PANEL: The first of four NCAA Coaches Panel rankings were released Thursday, Jan. 24, and there were three Air Force grapplers within the top-33 of their respective weight classes. Freshman Sidney Flores is 30th at 125 lbs, senior Alex Mossing is 29th at 157 lbs., and senior Anthony McLaughlin is 30th at 197 lbs. The Coaches Panel is one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine qualifiers and seeding for the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
NEXT UP: The Falcons will have a week off from competition as they prepare for the 2019 Big 12 Championships. The tournament will take place March 9-10 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla.
