Air Force Boxing Set to Host Wing Open Championships

The Wing Open finals will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, inside Clune Arena and admission is free.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force boxing team heads under the lights of Clune Arena this Thursday (Feb. 28), when it hosts the 61st-annual Wing Open Championships at 6:00 p.m. (MT). Admission is free to the 11-bout event, which will also be streamed live on GoAirForceFalcons.com.
The 2019 card, which includes nine men's bouts and two women's bouts, features nine returning champions, including senior Levi Rate, who will box in the 156-pound division this year after previously winning Wing Open titles at 132 pounds (2017) and 147 pounds (2018) pounds. Junior Devon Smith, the defending 156-pound champion, will compete in the 147-pound division this year, while unopposed classmate Jordan Garivay will earn the 195-pound title after winning the heavyweight crown as a sophomore.
Other Falcons looking to retain their Wing Open titles include senior Laura Drapinski (112 pounds), junior RJ Leon (119 pounds), junior Sean Chieves (132 pounds), senior Josh Turner (139 pounds), senior Levi Knox (165 pounds) and junior Austin Dreyer (185 pounds), who will face his 2018 challenger Nick Pingel in the only rematch of the night.
The winners of the Wing Open will form the nucleus of the Air Force squad that will represent the Academy at the upcoming National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) events this spring, as the Falcons look to bring home their 20th NCBA team title.
As a part of the boxing program's annual "Fighting for a Cause" event, this year's Wing Open Championships will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
