Falcons Remain Perfect at NCBA Western Regional

Air Force posted a 6-0 record on the second night of regional competition.
LOS ANGELES – The Air Force boxing team posted a 6-0 record this evening (March 15) during semifinal action of the National Collegiate Boxing Association Western Regional Championships in Los Angeles. The Falcons, who have advanced their entire squad into tomorrow's regional finals – and into next month's national championship tournament – are now 7-0 at the Western Regional.
Freshman Lawrence Barrett, who kicked off the Falcons' weekend with a win in last night's quarterfinals, earned his second victory in as many bouts after claiming a 125-pound semifinal decision over California's Marco Lopez. Juniors RJ Leon and Sean Chieves bookended Barrett's win with victories over boxers from Washington, as Leon decisioned Marc Hernandez at 119 pounds and Chieves forced the referee to stop his 132-pound bout with Steve Shin in the third round. Senior Josh Turner defeated Oregon State's Brandon Martin in a 139-pound semifinal, while junior Devon Smith earned a 147-pound decision over California's Ernesto Castillas.
On the women's side, senior Laura Drapinski claimed a 112-pound victory over Vanessa Nguyen of USC.
Tonight's six winners, as well as teammates that received byes through the first two rounds, return to action tomorrow (March 16) night for the championship brackets of the NCBA Western Regional.
