The senior co-captain concluded his stellar Air Force career
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Air Force Academy wrestling's senior co-captain Anthony McLaughlin ended his time at the 2019 NCAA Championships in the second round of consolations, Friday morning, March 22, at PPG Paints Arena. The loss ended the 2018-19 season for the Falcons, as well as a tremendous Air Force career for McLaughlin.
After winning his first consolation bout last night, McLaughlin was in the second round of consolations against No. 24 seeded Jake Jakobsen of Lehigh. Following a takedown and escape, McLaughlin trailed 2-1 after one. Jakobsen then rode out the whole second, keeping it 2-1 into the third, but giving him riding time.
In the third, Jakobsen took some injury time, so McLaughlin got to restart on bottom. He earned his escape, tying the match at 2-2 with 50 seconds left. Jakobsen was then able to secure the decisive takedown with about 15 seconds, locking up the 5-2 decision win and ending McLaughlin's tournament.
McLaughlin finishes his stellar Air Force career with 57 wins, including 18 in dual action and 12 in Big 12 duals. He was also the first Falcon to win a match at the NCAA Championships since 2016.
