3/30/2019 9:13:00 PM | Women's Tennis
The 71st ranked Air Force women's tennis team won 5-2 at Wyoming in Mountain West action Saturday at the UW Indoor Tennis Courts in Laramie, Wyo. The win lifted the Falcons to 20-1 on the season and 3-0 in MW duals.
The 20 wins ties for the most at Air Force in the Mountain West era and the most under head coach Kim Gidley. The 20 wins are also the third-most in program history.
The Falcons won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The No. 1 singles duo of TJ Fumagalli and Kristin Kerrigan defeated Elisa Koonik/Tess van Der Ploeg 6-0 and Nadeen Lieberman and Elizabeth Barnickel won at No. 3 over Mihaela Kaftanova/Ida Kraus 6-3.
"Our doubles came out strong in one of our best starts in dual match play," head coach Kim Gidley said. "TJ and Kristin dominated at No. 1 without losing a game. At No. 2 and 3 doubles, we had match points in both to convert for the doubles point. Nadeen dove for a volley on match point at No. 3 doubles to secure our first point."
Air Force went 4-2 in singles action.
Kerrigan earned the second point for Air Force, winning at No. 4 singles over Ana Royo 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Wyoming tied up the match up at 2-2 with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Barnickel fell at No. 2 to Koonik 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Meredith Jones dropped the No. 3 singles to Maria Oreshkina 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Fumagalli broke the tie for the Falcons with a No. 1 singles win over van Der Ploeg 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. The Falcons won the match as Lieberman won at No. 6 over Kaftanova 6-3, 6-1. Ashleigh Harvey added the fifth point with a win at No. 5 singles over Ana Fernandez 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 1-0 (10-7).
"This was a great match to be tested," Air Force head coach Kim Gidley said. "In singles, Wyoming gave us all that we could handle. They fight hard and are well coached, so we knew we had a long day ahead of us. For the second day in a row, Kristin battled back from being down in the first set to win in straight sets for the second point of the day. After Wyoming came back with two wins, TJ pulled out a tough three-set match to us the 3-2 lead. Nadeen then pulled out the straight set victory to get us win number 20! It was one of the cleanest matches I've seen her play this season."
"This was a great team effort and rewarding after losing to Wyoming last year," Gidley added. "Wyoming is tough to play anywhere, but to beat them at home in front of a big crowd was fun to do. This team has some lofty goals and is still getting better from match to match."
The Falcons return to action April 7, Hosting Utah State.
