Loeser, a former Air Force assistant, returns after two years coaching the Men's Resident Team at the USOTC.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Josh Loeser has been named the head coach of the Air Force men's gymnastics team, Air Force athletic director Nathan Pine announced today. Loeser, who previously spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Falcons, returns to the Academy after spending two years as an assistant coach for the Men's Resident Team Program at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
"It is a pleasure to welcome Coach Loeser back home to the Falcon family," Pine said. "He has a championship coaching pedigree and I'm confident he'll continue to build upon that here. His time at the Olympic Training Center, right here in our backyard of Colorado Springs, has helped prepare him to take over our men's gymnastics program. Our mission is to help build leaders of character for the Air Force and nation, and it's a mission he understandings and has the experience doing."
"I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to once again be part of the Air Force team," Loeser said. "I look forward to building the men's gymnastics program into what I know it can be. I have so much respect for what the athletes at all the military academies have chosen to do, and I hope that I can give the guys on this team the chance to showcase their abilities on the competition floor."
Loeser takes over the Air Force program after a successful two-year stint with the Men's Resident Team, which includes coaching seven gymnasts at this weekend's U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Kansas City.
As the resident team's assistant, Loeser coached gymnasts at the 2017 World Championships, the 2018 Birmingham World Cup and the 2018 Pan Am Championships, where Team USA won gold. Last year, he saw four gymnasts requalify to the national team at Winter Cup and another four requalify at the U.S. Championships, while capturing a pair of national championships. Loeser, who took two national team members to Japan for a senior team camp earlier this summer, continued to coach former Academy standout Timmy Wang, after he joined the USOTC through the Air Force World Class Athlete Program.
Prior to his time at the USOTC, Loeser spent five years at the Academy as an assistant coach (2013-17).
A four-time USAG Assistant Coach of the Year, he coached Air Force to five-straight USAG team titles and five consecutive team appearances at the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships after the program had made just two trips to the national meet in the previous 13 years. He helped the Falcons account for six NCAA All-America awards during a four-year span and saw Wang become a finalist for the Nissen-Emery award. During his tenure, the Falcons had six selections to the prestigious Winter Cup Challenge, claimed 15 individual USAG titles and earned 49 USAG All-America awards.
Loeser first joined the Academy staff in the fall of 2012 following a two-year stint at Reflex Gymnastics and Cheer Academy in Pearland, Texas. He spent one year as an assistant coach for boys in Level 4-10, before being promoted to Boy's Team Director in June 2011. During his tenure, three Level 10 gymnasts qualified to the Junior Olympic Nationals and the Level 4 team won the Texas South state championships.
Prior to joining the Reflex staff, Loeser served as an assistant coach for Level 4-10 gymnasts at Gulf Coast Gymnastics in his hometown of Alvin, Texas, where he coached the boy's team to the Texas Muscle Man Championship title in 2009. He also coached at several gymnastics camps, including three summers at the Academy's Falcon Sports Camps. Loeser also worked with three-time Olympian John Roethlisberger at the FlipFest Gymnastics Camp in Crossville, Tenn., where he coached boys and girls from levels 4-10.
A three-time state qualifier in the all-around for Gulf Gymnastics during his prep days, Loeser spent three years as a member of the Air Force gymnastics team. Following his Academy career, he spent two years in the Air Force, serving as an Admissions/Dispositions Clerk and Member Services Clerk at Lackland AFB, Texas.
Loeser is a 2012 graduate of the University of Houston, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics.
"I would like to thank Dennis McIntyre, Brett McClure, Andriy Stepanchenko, and the entire USA Gymnastics family for allowing me to be a part of their team," Loeser added. "It has been an honor to work with them over the past two years and I look forward to supporting them now from the NCAA side of the sport. Lastly, I would like to thank the members of the men's gymnastics resident program at the Olympic Training Center – Donothan Bailey, Sam Mikulak, Eddie Penev, Kanji Oyama, Adrian De Los Angeles, Donnell Whittenburg, Robert Neff and Timmy Wang. Working with those men has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I wish them the best in their journey to the 2020 Olympics and in everything that follows."
