Air Force Wraps up Opening Round of Friday Night Fights

Ife Onigbanjo and Madison Lloyd earned the program's Boxer of the Week awards.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force boxing team kicked off the 2019-20 season this evening (Sept. 20), as a strong mix of veterans and newcomers took to the ring for the first of four Friday Night Fights in the Academy's Boxing Room. Following a 14-bout card, with contests ranging from 118 pounds to the heavyweight division, senior Ife Onigbanjo was named the men's Boxer of the Week and sophomore Madison Lloyd earned the program's first-ever weekly women's award.
Onigbanjo captured the team's first weekly award of the season after earning a unanimous 146-pound decision over classmate Sean Chieves, the defending NCBA champion at 132 pounds. Junior Justin Couty earned a 147-pound victory over classmate William Winstead IV. Senior RJ Leon claimed the judges' decision over sophomore Ryan Dinndorf at 120 pounds, while sophomore Lawrence Barrett decisioned classmate Don Angelo Piasecki in the 130-pound bout. Freshman Michael Kometer won his collegiate debut with a 137-pound decision over classmate Noah Lleva, while senior Devon Smith defeated sophomore Ayaz Mustafa at 161 pounds and senior Cenada Clifton-Smith decisioned classmate Levi Rate in the 175-pound contest.
Three of the men's bouts were determined by split decision during Friday's competition. Senior Micah Mackaly earned the split vote over classmate Nick Pingel in the heavyweight bout, while fellow senior Austin Dreyer claimed the 192-pound victory over freshman Walker Morris. Sophomore Zach Phillips rounded out the men's split victories, as he defeated senior William Ragland in the 151-pound contest.
Lloyd, who claimed the 141-pound decision after earning a split vote over freshman Shannon Williams, was one of four female Friday Night champions. Junior Shay Stayton, a former member of the Falcons' cross country team, earned her first victory with a 118-pound win over sophomore Elexus Oliver. Fellow sophomore Ymani Nesmith decisioned classmate Samantha Thompson in the 175-pound bout, while sophomore Christen Greene earned the only early-victory of the night with a referee-stopped victory over senior Nicole Demoret at 131 pounds.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Annapolis to face Navy in the annual showdown between the two programs.
