The Falcons look to defend their 2020 WAC Championship title
USAFA, Colo. -- The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team opens its 2020-21 regular season when it plays host to the University of Wyoming for a Western Athletic Conference dual Thursday evening, Dec. 3, at the Cadet Natatorium. The meet against the rival Cowboys will begin at 5 p.m. MT.
The dual is closed to the general public, but will be streamed live on the AF Falcons YouTube page.
The Falcons begin their quest to defend their 2020 WAC Championship, which they won in record fashion. AF finished with a new modern WAC record 864 points and finished 172 points ahead of the second place team. Overall on the weekend, the Falcons won 12 of the 21 events. Air Force also set nine school records, while also putting 30 new times in the all-time Academy top-10.
AF is poised to defend their crown, as they return all but four letterwinners from a year ago, one of which was Zach Nelson, the reigning WAC Swimmer of the Year. Returning however is the defending WAC Freshman of the Year, sophomore Wen Zhang. The Falcons also return swimmers who have set a combined 27 top-10 times, as well as five individual school record holders.
Last season, before winning the WAC Championship, Air Force went 9-4 in dual action, including 4-1 in conference and 6-1 at home. Against the Cowboys, AF dropped a tightly contested dual, 159-141. The Falcons won six events overall, to go along with six runner-up finishes, but were DQ'd in the final relay to fall just short.
Thursday marks the lone event for Air Force during the fall semester. The Falcons will return to action in 2021 when they host Colorado Mesa and the Colorado School of Mines for a tri-dual, Friday, Jan. 8 at the Cadet Natatorium.
