Air Force will wrestle in 10 duals, all versus Big 12 opponents
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team and Head Coach Sam Barber announced its abbreviated 2021 schedule today, Dec. 30. The slate will include 10 duals overall, with all 10 coming against Big 12 opponents.
"It has been a great opportunity to grow, improve, and prepare during these unprecedented times," Barber stated. "To say we are excited to compete would be a great understatement. We are committed to not allowing our circumstances overshadow our mission and our goals. This team is prepared and fired up to compete. It is who we are, and it is what we do. We are warriors in our United States Air and Space Forces. We have grown our program, we have wrestled and now we will compete."
The season kicks off at home inside Clune Arena Sunday, Jan. 17, as AF welcomes in Northern Colorado and South Dakota State for a tri-meet. The Falcons will wrestle the UNC Bears at noon, followed by a match-up with the Jackrabbits starting at 3 p.m.
The following two weeks will be spent on the road, as Air Force will meet up with Oklahoma State Friday, Jan. 22, at a neutral site up in Greeley, Colo. Then the following weekend will be up in Laramie, Wyo. as AF will face-off with the rival Wyoming Cowboys, Saturday, Jan. 30.
Then comes Senior Day, as AF will host Fresno State for a dual at Clune, Saturday, Feb. 6. The Falcons will honor a 12-man senior class. On the same day, the Falcons will then make a trek back up to Greeley for a tri-meet with the host UNC Bears, as well as West Virginia.
Air Force's final weekend of regular season competition will come Saturday, Feb. 13, up in Brookings, S.D., as AF will wrestle three duals in one day against the host SDST Jackrabbits, as well as North Dakota State and Utah Valley.
Then it is time for the postseason as the Big 12 Championships will once again be contested in Tulsa, Okla. Dates are still TBD for the event, but will most likely occur either the final weekend of February, or the first weekend in March. The Falcon wrestlers who make it to the NCAAs will head to St. Louis, Mo., March 18-20, for a chance to become the USAFA's first All-American since 2003.
"The 2021 season will be the culmination of many months of commitment, hard work, dedication, and execution that will define this team and program for many years to come," Barber continued. "This is going to be a special season!"
All of Air Force's home events this season will be closed to the public. A free live stream will be available on Trackwrestling.com.
