Freshman Dylan Martinez got an upset win at 149 lbs.
NORMAN, Okla. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team dropped a road dual to Oklahoma, 24-10, Friday evening, Feb. 14, at the McCasland Field House. AF had a couple big highlights, including freshman Dylan Martinez knocking off the No. 31 ranked wrestler at 149 lbs., as part of their three bout wins.
Martinez was in a dog fight, tied at 2-2 in the third, when he notched a clutch reversal to get a 4-2 decision win. It was his third dual win of the season and second Big 12 dual victory. Elsewhere, sophomore 165 pounder Vincent Dolce won the first dual match of his career, in major decision form.
The dual started at 165 and started off with a bang as Dolce picked up his first dual win of his career with a 13-5 major decision. The sophomore got two takedowns, four nearfall points, and a reversal, and in the end got riding time for the big win.
OU then rattled off three straight wins to take a 10-4 lead before sophomore Kayne Hutchison broke the streak with a hard fought 8-7 decision win to make it 10-7 match at the midway point. It was Hutchison's third straight dual win and his sixth dual win on the season.
After the break, OU had three more wins to put the dual away in terms of team points. AF had a bright spot at 149 lbs., though, as Martinez used a third period reversal to knock off Jacob Butler, who had come into the week ranked at No. 31 in the coaches panel. OU would go on to win at 157 to finish off the 24-10 dual score.
AF will return to the mats Sunday, Feb. 16, when they take on the Bison of North Dakota State in Big 12 action. The dual from Fargo, N.D. is set to begin at 12 p.m. MT.
