Senior Levi Rate becomes the 16th Falcon to win four Wing Open titles.
Senior Sean Chieves and sophomore Madison Lloyd earned Most Outstanding Male and Female Boxer Awards, respectively, to highlight the 62nd Annual Wing Open Boxing Championships Saturday afternoon in Clune Arena. Chieves won his third title and Lloyd her second at 132 pounds.
Senior Levi Rate, the most decorated boxer in the lineup, became the 16th Falcon in program history to earn his fourth title, in as many different weight divisions. Rate claimed the 132-pound title as a freshman, the 147-pound title as a sophomore and the 156-pound title as a junior and 165-pound title this season.
Senior Devon Smith (156 pounds) earned his third title while senior Cenada Clifton Smith (175 pounds) earned his second title to highlight the rest of the card. The biggest upset of the day came at 185 pounds with freshman Walker Morris defeating two-time champion Austin Dreyer with an early stoppage. Morris sent Dreyer to a knee in the first few seconds of the fight before it ended in the second round.
Five boxers claimed Wing Open titles by virtue of being unopposed in their respective weight divisions. Senior RJ Leon earned his third championship at 119 pounds, while sophomore Lawrence Barrett (125 pounds) and classmate Isabel Eicher (147 pounds) took home titles for the second-straight year. In addition, Shannon Williams and Ymani Nesmith picked up their first Wing Open titles after being unopposed in the 139- and 165-pound weight divisions, respectively.
Four Falcons picked up titles in their first appearance in the Wing Open. Junior Shay Stayton opened the day with a decision at 112 while sophomores Maksat Omar at 139 pounds, Sam Thompson (156 pounds) and Wayne Overman (heavyweight) were victorious. Sophomore Zach Phillips picked up his first title in his second try at 147 pounds.
The champions of the Wing Open will form the core of the Air Force squad that will represent the Academy at the upcoming National Collegiate Boxing Association events this spring, where the Falcons look to bring home their 20th NCBA team title. For 2020, the NCBA Western Regionals will be held March 12-14 in Reno, Nev., while the national championship meet will be held in Lafayette, La., on April 2-4.
