USAFA, Colo.- The Air Force Academy wrestling team and Head Coach Sam Barber have announced seniors Casey Jumps and Cody Surratt will lead the Falcons as co-captains for the upcoming 2020-21 season. The duo were voted captains by their fellow teammates.
"Every member of our team is exceptional, and to be recognized as a leader of leaders on this team marks Casey and Cody as extraordinary," Barber said. "Both Casey and Cody live out through word and action our team and Academy core values. They are two uniquely different leaders that will offset and enhance each other's strengths and areas of growth. The team will have outstanding examples to follow and two passionate representatives to support the team voice."
Jumps, a native of Platte City, Mo., is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree, and the returning starter at 197 lbs. In his career, Jumps has racked up 28 wins, including six in dual action. This past season, he started every dual at 197 lbs., while also placing third at the All-Academy Championships.
Surratt hails from Wadsworth, Ohio and is the incumbent starter at 174 lbs. Last season, Surratt had a breakout campaign, going 23-14, with the 23 wins tied for the most on the team. He also tied the team lead in pins (15) and tech falls (5), while his 11 pins against D1 opponents was the fifth-most in the nation. He wrapped up the season by placing seventh at 174 lbs. at the Big 12 Championships.
"As coaches, we see two leaders that have great integrity, love the fight, lead from the front, persist and overcome adversity," Barber continued. "They have gratitude, they have the will to win, and they will hold their brothers on the team accountable to our high team standard that produces outstanding Air Force cadet-wrestlers. They are also bought into our COVID mantra of we will wrestle, we will compete and we will grow our program!"
