Falcons drop two close games at Julian Fraser Tournament

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. . – Air Force lost a pair of close games on the first day of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, Saturday, Oct. 23. After an 11-10 overtime loss to No. 12 Princeton in San Jose, the Falcons fell to Brown, 11-9, in Santa Clara.
In the first game of the day, Princeton came from behind for an 11-10 overtime win over Air Force. Gavin Jones and Ryan McLaughlin gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Jones scored two more in the second quarter as the Falcons built a 6-2 lead late in the second. Grant Snyder, Sam Fuller and Ian Christie all scored in the third quarter for a 9-6 lead. However, the Tigers out-scored the Falcons, 3-0, in the fourth quarter and tied the game with one second remaining in regulation. Jones netted his fourth of the game in the first overtime, but Princeton tied the game with 1:34 left in the second overtime. Tiger Joan Coloma scored the game-winner at 2:29 of the third overtime period.
The Falcons took the early lead against Brown as Corey Tanis and Snyder each scored twice for a 4-1 lead late in the first. Air Force led 5-3 at the half, but the Bears roared back to take a 6-5 lead late in the third. McLaughlin tied the game at 6-6 and Tanis' third of the game tied the game at 7-7 late in the third. Brown took a 9-7 lead, but Gavin Jones got the Falcons to within one at 9-8 with 6:13 left. The Bears scored the next two for an 11-8 lead with less than two minutes left.
Air Force (16-6 overall and 5-2 WWPA) will face Iona at 3:40 pm MT on Sunday, Oct. 24. The game against Bucknell, scheduled for Sunday, was cancelled.
