ARLINGTON, Texas – The Air Force boxing team claimed a 6-4 victory over their counterparts from Army West Point and earned the right to Sing Second in the annual service academy showdown this evening (Nov. 5), as it opened the festivities of the Lockheed Martin Commanders' Classic at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Junior Walker Morris, who secured the Falcons' victory with a decision in the final bout, was named the night's Outstanding Male Boxer. Closing out the first-ever boxing event held at Globe Life Field – the home of the Texas Rangers, Morris earned a split-decision victory over Jon Parham in the 182-pound finale.
Army West Point won the first two bouts of the night, as Kristina Hughes – the night's Outstanding Female Boxer – decisioned sophomore Cat Tak at 125 pounds and Dylan Sheriff took a decision from junior Garrett Kim at 130 pounds. Seniors Maddie Lloyd and Maksat Omar quickly evened the team score with victories in the next two bouts, as Lloyd earned a split-decision victory over Skye Williams in the 135-pound contest and Omar earned a unanimous vote from the judges in his 139-pound bout with Billy Purevdorj.
The Black Knights went back on top (3-2) after Isaiah Queen received a split-decision win over senior Zach Phillips in the 142-pound bout, but Air Force rolled off the next three wins – all by decision – to take a 5-3 lead in the team score. Senior Sam Thompson claimed a 145-pound win over Emily Leahy, while juniors Tyler Dalzell (153 pounds) and Nicolas Nakaoka (155 pounds) claimed victories over Denver Jackson and Mike Iannelli in their respective bouts. Army West Point pulled within one (5-4) following Ryan Chi's 156-pound decision over senior Alan Manzo, but Morris sealed the win with his 182-pound victory.
