No. 9 Air Force hosts California Baptist and Austin College

This Week: The ninth-ranked Air Force water polo team (3-3 overall, 1-0 WWPA) hosts four games at the Cadet Natatorium this weekend. The Falcons will face California Baptist (2-2, 0-1 WWPA) on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 11 am and 3 pm MT. Air Force will then host Austin College (0-2) on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 6 pm and Sunday, Feb. 14 at noon MT.

Senior Day: Air Force will honor its eight seniors prior to the game against Austin College, Saturday, Feb. 13, at 6 pm. The senior class includes: Jack Alexander, James Burke, Ben Gomez, Jason Hires, Campbell Harris, Fabio Salvioni, Aiden Sandhu and Ian Shepherd. Alexander has played in 31 career games with four goals and two assists. He earned WWPA all-academic honors as sophomore. Burke played 58 career games in goal, was named to the WWPA all-freshman team and to the WWPA all-tournament team as a sophomore. Harris, the team captain this season, has played in 78 career games and has 103 goals, 114 points, 21 steals and nine field blocks. Harris was the team MVP and second-team all-conference last season. Hires has played in 73 games and has 28 goals, 48 points, 23 blocks and 32 steals. He is a three-time WWPA all-academic selection and was an academic All-American in 2017. Sandhu played four years at a goalkeeper. Shepherd has played in 61 career games and has 13 goals, 42 assists, 55 points, 18 steals and six field blocks. He has been named WWPA all-academic twice. Salvioni and Gomez are both team members and managers.
About the 'Roos: Austin College is in its third season of collegiate water polo. The 'Roos compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and finished last season ranked 10th in Division III. The 'Roos opened the season last weekend with a pair of losses to Air Force in Sherman, Texas.
About the Lancers: CBU is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the WWPA. All four games have been played against Loyola Marymount. LMU won the season-opening conference game, 13-11, and then CBU defeated the ninth-ranked Lions, 13-7, in a non-conference game. Last weekend, the Lancers and Lions split a pair of non-conference games with CBU winning game one, 14-6, and LMU winning game two, 15-10. Zach Lowery leads the team with 13 points. PJ McDonough leads the team with eight goals.

Air Force and California Baptist have played 36 times and Air Force leads the series, 22-14. Last season, CBU defeated Air Force, 12-10. The teams have split their last two games as Air Force defeated CBU, 6-5, in the 2018 WWPA playoffs.
National Rankings: Sophomore Grant Snyder leads the nation in points (28), is tied for second in goals (19), fourth in assists (9) and fifth in steals (12). Snyder also leads the nation in sprint wins with 23. Senior Jason Hires is tied for the national lead with five field blocks. Junior Anthony Tolbert is seventh in the nation with 38 saves.

In the first game, senior Corey Tanis scored a career high five goals while Gavin Jones and Campbell Harris each had three. Air Force (3-3 overall and 1-0 WWPA) raced out to a 5-0 lead at the end of the first and 8-2 at the half. Tanis had three goals in the first half while Harris had two. The Falcons built a 13-5 at end of the third en route to the 19-10 win. Sophomore A.J. Kuypers had four saves and two steals. In the second game, sophomore Grant Snyder had three goals as Air Force swept the day with an 18-4 win in the series finale. Snyder scored all three goals in the first quarter, and Henry Yavitt added two more, as the Falcons built a 7-1 lead after the first eight minutes. Cole Kopperud and Gavin Jones each scored two in the second quarter for a 13-2 lead at the half. Junior Anthony Tolbert made 12 saves for the Falcons.
