Falcons Fall to #24 North Dakota State in Dual Finale

AF won four bouts, with three by bonus points
BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team got three of four wins by bonus points, but it was not enough in a 28-19 dual defeat to Big 12 foe #24 North Dakota State Saturday morning, Feb. 13, at South Dakota State's Frost Arena.
The difference in the match came at 133, where NDSU got six points after an injury default. Besides that match, NDSU went 5-4 in the matches fully contested, with two pins and a major of their own.
The dual started at the top as sophomore #28 Cody Phippen rolled to a comfortable 17-0 tech fall. He moves to 7-2 overall on the season after a bonus match win, which came by fall. Both wins were his first victories by bonus points this season. NDSU answered back with the injury default and a major to take a 10-5 lead.
Newly nationally ranked sophomore #33 Dylan Martinez then stepped up to face Jaden Van Maanen. Despite facing a nasty tilt and nearly being pinned in the first, Martinez battled back to get some back points of his own, and hold on for a thrilling 10-9 decision win. He also moves to 8-2 on the season after two more wins coming in bonus matches.
From there, NDSU rattled off wins in four of the next five, including two pins. At 174, senior captain #24 Cody Surratt rolled to a 17-0 tech fall of his own over the 33rd nationally ranked wrestler. He moved to 4-2 on the year.
In the final dual bout of the day, freshman #28 ranked Wyatt Hendrickson got a prime opportunity as he took on #17 Brandon Metz. The rookie wasted almost no time in dispatching Metz, as he pinned him in just 2:46. It was his fourth pin on the season, and his sixth win by bonus points out of eight total wins.
Elsewhere in bonus matches, sophomore Graham Shore picked up a pair of wins, both by decision. Freshman Sam Wolf went 2-0 at 184, scoring two decision wins, and he got double-digit points in both. Other wrestlers that picked up bonus wins were freshman Garrett Kuchan, junior Bradley Bitting, freshman Garrett Bowers, freshman Giano Petrucelli in his AF debut, junior Vincent Dolce, senior Brock Jennings, and junior Kayne Hutchison by fall.
AF will return to the mats for the final event of the regular season, the USAFA Round Robin, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 20, at the East Gym. Action against Wyoming, Northern Colorado, and Utah Valley, will begin at 10 a.m. MT.
