Women’s Tennis With A Pair of 7-0 Sweeps In Texas

Air Force women's tennis (4-1) won a pair of duals in Midland, Texas Saturday. The Falcons opened with a 7-0 win over Texas-Permian Basin and 7-0 over Western New Mexico in a snow-delayed nightcap.

Against UTPB, the Falcons swept the doubles and won each singles match in straight sets.

The Falcons opened with a win at No. 3 doubles, as Sydney Fitch and Hailey Stelse defeated Sofia Rischmagui and Monika Cantu 6-0. Air Force then got 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Meredith Jones and Mebeli Becerra won at No. 1 over Lore Mewis and Krystal Smith. Alex Kuo and Isabella Flodin won at No. 2 over Lea Mjertan and Anaya Singh.

In singles, Stelse got the first point at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mjertan. Jones then won at No. 1 over Singh 6-1, 6-2. Kuo won at No. 3 over Smith 6-4, 6-2.

The Falcons won the match when Fitch won at No. 2 over Mewis 6-1, 6-4. Becerra went on to win at No. 5 over Rischmagui 6-2, 6-0 and Flodin won at No. 6 over Cantu 6-0, 6-2.

"For the first match of the season outdoors, we played a doubleheader in the cold and finished late at night," head coach Kim Gidley said. ""We won our second match of the day 7-0 against Western New Mexico. The match was delayed due to the snow on the courts earlier in the day and we ended up starting in the evening and finished under the lights."

"This Air Force team showed a lot of grit," Gidley added. "Our team played with a great deal of intensity and fire. They are doing a tremendous job of incorporating the shots we work on in practice and executing. As a team - they are coming together in every way and it makes it fun."

Air Force returns to action tomorrow against Seward County College.
