AF finished runner-up with 643 points
LAS VEGAS, Nev./FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Air Force Academy men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2021 Western Athletic Conference championships with two more individual titles, as well as a school record setting relay title, Saturday, Feb. 27. The Falcons competed in the final six swimming events at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium, while the divers competed on the platform at Northern Arizona's Aquatic Center.
As a team, the Falcons finished with 643 points to finish runner-up to the host Rebels of UNLV, who won the team title with 907 points. AF won seven events overall, while also setting two new school records and achieving eight new top-10 program times. The Falcons also had seven NCAA B cuts.
The individual titles today came from junior Isaac Gwin in the 100 free, and junior Andrew Limpert in the 200 fly. For Gwin, it was his third individual title on the weekend, making him just the third Falcon in program history to win three events in one championship. He joins Zach Nelson, who achieved it last season, and Chris Knaute, who did it twice in 2005 and 2006.
The relay crown came from the squad of sophomore Wen Zhang, Gwin, freshman Jacob Bulseco, and junior Corey Shepard in the 400 free relay. The squad touched in with a new school record time of 2:53.25, just .03 seconds ahead of UNLV. It is the second-straight season the Falcons have won the 400 free relay.
In the 100 free, Gwin touched in first, while Zhang was right behind him for a 1-2 finish. Also in the A final was Shepard, who placed sixth overall. All three had top-10 AF times in the prelims, as Gwin had a 43.40 (2nd), Zhang a 43.50 (5th) and Shepard a 43.58 (7th). All three times are NCAA B cuts.
For Limpert, he claimed the first WAC title of his career after touching in at 1:47.34, almost a full second ahead of second place. The junior set a program record in the 200 fly last season (1:44.47) when he took runner-up. Junior Logan Davis was also in the 200 fly finals, and he finished in fifth place with a 1:50.07.
On the diving board, senior Cole Armagost concluded his final WAC Championships with a third top-three finish, this time on the platform. He took silver with a season-best score of 343.00. It was just 4.2 points off the school record score on the platform.
The top Falcon finishers in the other three individual swimming events were junior Adam Grimm in the 1650 free, as he took seventh, sophomore Gabriel Bartolomei in the 200 back, taking ninth, and sophomore Ben DuFauchard in the 200 breast, as he took 12th.
The Falcons will now wait and see if any of the NCAA B cuts are good enough to qualify for the 2021 NCAA Championships, while Armagost will head to the NCAA Zone E event on all three dives.
