Wrestling Goes 2-1 In Busy Day on the Mats

AF knocked off #21 Northern Colorado for its first ranked dual win since 2002
USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy wrestling team won two of three duals in a busy day split between USAFA and Greeley, Saturday, Feb. 6. The Falcons (2-4, 2-4 Big 12) defeated Fresno State, 43-4, at the East Gym, and then went on to knock off rival and #21 ranked Northern Colorado at the Bank of Colorado Arena , 31-7. In the final match-up of the night, AF fell in a tight match to #20 West Virginia, 20-17.
The nationally ranked win over the UNC Bears marked the first ranked win for the Falcons since defeating #14 Northern Iowa, 18-17, in 2002.
The Falcons also had several upset wins over nationally ranked opponents to highlight the day. Against UNC, junior #16 Jared Van Vleet knocked off #7 Mosha Schwartz, senior #33 Cody Surratt defeated #15 Jackson Hemauer, and junior Kayne Hutchison pinned #15 Jacob Seely. Then against WVU, junior Bradley Bitting defeated #32 ranked Jeff Boyd.
Four AF wrestlers went undefeated in dual action, as sophomore Dylan Martinez and senior Parker Simington each went 3-0. Simington notched a pin against FS, while Martinez got a major against WVU. Then Surratt and freshman #27 Wyatt Hendrickson each went went 2-0, with Surratt notching a tech fall, and Hendrickson getting a tech and a pin.
Other bonus point dual wins came from Hutchison in a tech fall against Fresno, and junior Vincent Dolce in a major decision against UNC. Meanwhile, sophomore #27 Cody Phippen went 2-1 on the day with a pair of decisions. Van Vleet joined him, going 2-1 overall. In his only dual match of the day, freshman Sam Wolf took a hard-earned 1-0 decision over WVU.
In bonus matches, freshmen Garrett Kuchan and Garrett Henigin both got a major decision against Fresno, while freshman Garrett Bowers, Wolf, and seniors Jacoby Ward and Jimmy Weaver all notched decisions against UNC.
Prior to the dual against FS, the Falcons honored their 12-man Class of 2021 for their amazing accomplishments both on and off the mat. Those honored included Justin Becci, Trace Carello, Brock Jennings, Tanner Johnson, Casey Jumps, Terence Perkins, Lenny Petersen, Cole Phelps, Parker Simington, Cody Surratt, Jacoby Ward, and Jimmy Weaver.
The Falcons will be back on the mats next Saturday, Feb. 13, for another three-dual day, this time all in one location in Brookings, S.D. AF will face the host SDSU Jackrabbits, along with duals against North Dakota State and Utah Valley.
