Women’s Tennis Handles St. Mary’s, 5-2

Air Force women's tennis (6-2) defeated St. Mary's (Texas) University (6-3), 5-2, Friday morning in San Antonio, Texas.

The Falcons opened by taking the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The duo of Meredith Jones and Ksenia Vasilyev won at No. 1 over Ashley Penshorn and Marcia Garcia 6-1. The Falcons took the point with a win at No. 2 as Alex Kuo and Isabell Flodin defeated Marina Vigil and Gabi Ioannou 6-3.

Air Force went 4-2 in singles play. After the Rattlers won at No. 1 for the first singles point, the Falcons won the next three matches in straight sets to claim the win.
Alex Kuo won at No. 2 over Garcia 6-3, 6-2 for the first singles point. Isabella Flodin then won at No. 6 over Abigail Csengery 6-0, 6-1. The clinching point came at No. 5 as Hailey Stelse defeated Elena Munoz 6-4, 6-2. Air Force also earned a win at No. 3 as Shailla Alda defeated Vigil 6-4, 7-5.

Jones fell at No. 1 to Penshorn 6-1, 6-2 and Mebeli Becerra fell at No. 4 to Ioannou 6-4, 7-5.

"I was very impressed with the team effort and how everyone responded to competing today," head coach Kim Gidley said. "We were outside in very windy conditions and without one of our top players due to COVID-19 restrictions. In competing on the road during Freshman Recognition for only the fourth time in 22 years, this was a different experience for us. All three of our four-degrees won all of their matches in a much needed team effort today. Our mission for our four-degrees was to make a difference, which they definitely did. The doubles point set the tone for the match and then the team stepped it up in the singles. Every player really made a difference in the singles and you just gotta love that as a coach."

Air Force returns to action tomorrow against Trinity University.
