Air Force Athletics nears end of 2020-21 with graduation ceremony
5/26/2021 8:01:00 AM | General
Air Force athletics is nearing the close of 2020-21 season, as cadet-athletes from the class of 2021 will participate in graduation ceremonies today in Falcon Stadium. The class of 2021 includes athletes from 27 intercollegiate sports, plus cheer and boxing.
The newly-commissioned second lieutenants will be going into career fields such as contracting, remotely piloted aircraft, pilot training, engineering, personnel, acquisitions, diversity recruiting, logistics, aircraft maintenance, financial management, missile operations, intelligence, space operations, cyber operations, systems acquisitions and graduate school.
Air Force athletics has had another banner year, despite all of the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. A breakdown of team and individual highlights follows, as well as senior's post-graduate assignments and a short recap of each sport. Baseball and outdoor track are still competing, so those recaps are not complete. The department recognized its top individual award winners and most valuable athletes from each sport earlier this week. To view that list click HERE.

2020-21 Air Force Season Wraps
Men's and Women's Cross Country
In a delayed 2020 campaign that featured only three meets during the Spring of 2021, the Air Force cross country team produced another stellar season, with conference titles and All-American performances. The men captured their third Mountain West title with just 29 points, as all five scoring runners placed within the top nine. Ryan Cole was named the MW Head Coach of the Year, while Luke Combs was honored with the MW Freshman of the Year award. The squad, ranked among the nation's top 20, qualified to the NCAA Championships, where they finished 19th. On the women's side, Mahala Norris dominated the headlines – claiming the women's first individual MW cross country title in program history and placing fourth at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Football
Air Force finished the COVID-shortened 2020 season with a 3-3 overall record. The Falcons finished fifth in the Mountain West with a 2-2 mark. Air Force won the program's second national rushing title with a 305.7 per-game average, leading the conference for the fourth straight season. The Falcons also led the conference in third down conversions (48.5) and time of possession (32:30). The defense was among the top units in program history, finishing third nationally in scoring defense with a 15.0 average. The 15.0 mark is the best at the Academy since 1997.
Golf
The Falcons concluded the season with an 11th-place finish at the Mountain West Championships in Tucson, Ariz. The fall season was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic and the spring season was shortened to just six events. The team's top tournament came at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational with a 10th place finish and an 883 (+18) team score. Senior Kyle Spencer led the Falcons with a 75.44 season stroke average. He shot a season best 218 (+2) at the Mountain West Championships.
Women's Soccer
The women's soccer team went 2-6 overall in an abbreviated Mountain West-only spring season. Both of the team's wins came against rival Wyoming by scores of 2-1 (2OT) and 1-0. AF had a trio of Falcons named to the Mountain West Conference All-Newcomer Team. Freshmen goalie Cammi Bych, forward Jordi Ives, and midfielder Grace Sublette were all honored by the MW for their solid campaigns in the spring 2021 season.
Men's Soccer
Air Force men's soccer concluded the belated 2020 season with a 6-5-2 overall record and a 4-4-1 finish in the Western Athletic Conference, finishing seventh in the league. Due to WAC post-season eligibility requirements, California Baptist who joined the WAC in 2018, was unable to participate in post-season, which moved Air Force into the sixth position. The Falcons took advantage, becoming the first sixth-seed to win the WAC Men's Soccer Tournament, knocking off the top three seeds to the title with a shootout win over third-seed San José State, a 2-0 win over second-seed UT Rio Grande Valley and a 3-0 win over top-seed Grand Canyon. The Falcons made the program's 12th appearance in the national tournament, third in the last four seasons, where they fell to six-seed Seton Hall, 2-1, in the second round.
Volleyball
Air Force had a record-setting season during a 2020 campaign that took place in the Spring of 2021. The Falcons finished the shortened, conference-only season with a 7-6 record, marking the program's first winning season since 1999. Air Force started the season with a bang, sweeping perennial powerhouse Colorado State during the opening weekend – a victory that snapped a 53-match losing streak to the Rams. Air Force, the first conference team to sweep the Rams on their home court (Moby Arena) since 2010, split every weekend series and used a 3-1 victory over Boise State in the season finale to claim the winning record. Joi Harvey accounted for several "firsts" for Air Force – becoming the first Falcon to earn the MW Freshman of the Year award and the first player in 27 years to earn an all-region honor from the AVCA. In addition, she and junior Bailey Keith were named all-Mountain West, marking the first time at the DI level that Air Force had placed multiple players on an all-conference team.
Water Polo
The Air Force water polo team ended the 2020-21 season with a 4-7 overall record. The Falcons won the Western Water Polo Association regular-season title with a 2-0 conference record and were the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The season ended with an 11-9 loss to sixth-ranked California Baptist in the WWPA Championship game, leaving the Falcons one win shy of the NCAA Tournament. Air Force finished the season ranked eighth in the final national poll, the highest ranking in school history. Sophomore Grant Snyder earned second-team All-America honors, the highest in school history.
Women's Basketball
Air Force women's basketball concluded the shortened 2020-21 campaign with an 8-18 overall record and a 4-14 mark in the Mountain West, finishing ninth in the league. The Falcons made it to the MW quarterfinals for the second-straight season, defeating SDSU in the first round and falling to top-seeded New Mexico thereafter. Two Falcons earned conference post-season honors in Riley Snyder (All-MW Honorable Mention) and Kassady Huffman (MW All-Defensive Team).
Men's Basketball
Air Force men's basketball went 5-20 overall and finished 10th in the Mountain West with a 3-17 record in conference play. Under the guidance of head coach Joe Scott, the Falcons earned its first-ever road with against Nevada. The Falcons averaged 7.1 steals per game, which was the best at Air Force in 15 years. Air Force was the lone program in the Mountain West to play all 20 conference games as scheduled (two other teams played 20 games, but reached 20 after making up games).
Boxing
The Air Force boxing team competed just four times during the shortened 2021 season, with three of those contests being intrasquad competitions at the Academy. Five Falcons successfully defended their titles at the annual Wing Open Championships, while sophomore Alan Long and junior Maddie Lloyd were named the meet's Outstanding Boxers for their respective squads. In their only non-Academy event of the year, the Falcons split a 10-card outing at the Cincinnati Fitness and Boxing Spring Showdown.
Fencing
Air Force men's fencing went 7-6 and the women's team went 7-7 in team competition in 2020-21. The Falcons had a program-record 10 NCAA qualifiers, which included all six possible qualifying slots on the men's side. Air Force finished ninth overall at the NCAA Championships, its best finish since the 2003 season. Air Force had a pair of All-Americans in sophomore Matthew Han (second-team men's epee) and junior Nestor Levin (second-team men's foil). Head coach Omar Elgeziry was named Western Fencing Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Women's Gymnastics
Air Force women's gymnastics concluded the season with a 4-18 overall record and a 1-1 mark in the MPSF, splitting the first-place position with San Jose State, the only other MPSF team to compete amidst the pandemic. The Falcons posted a season-high team score of 194.400 at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Championships.
Men's Gymnastics
The 13th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team had an up-and-down year in 2021 – earning its highest finish ever at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, but missing a team appearance at the NCAA National Qualifier by one spot in the national rankings. The Falcons registered a season-high 388.350 to take third at the MPSF Championships, defeating California for just the second time in program history and marking the first time since 2002 that they hadn't finished last at the conference meet. Air Force, which placed second at the All-Academy Championships and Rocky Mountain Open, sent eight individuals to the National Qualifier, with Frankie Valentin and Garrett Braunton advancing to the finals.
Ice Hockey
Air Force finished the 2020-21 season with a 3-10-1 overall and conference record and placed 10th in Atlantic Hockey. In typical Air Force hockey fashion, the Falcons played their best hockey late in the season. After an overtime win at Bentley, and a two-week pause due to COVID, the Falcons concluded the regular season with a home sweep of Canisius. As the No. 10 seed in the Atlantic Hockey playoffs, the Falcons fell to Bentley, 7-3, in the opening round of the playoffs to end the season. Sophomore Willie Reim led the team in scoring with 12 points in 14 games.
Men's and Women's Rifle
Air Force finished the season with a 9-8 overall record and finished second in the Patriot Rifle Conference with a 4-5 mark. The Falcons opened the season winning the President's Trophy. Air Force qualified for the NCAA championships for the eighth consecutive season and finished the year ranked eighth.
Women's Swimming
The women's swimming and diving team went 7-6 in dual action, including 2-3 in conference duals. Air Force finished seventh at the 2021 MW Championships, scoring 726 points. AF had three athletes named to the 2021 Mountain West Championship All-Conference Team, sophomore Sefilina Maile, senior Kylie Stronko, and sophomore Mason Brown. In addition, Stronko became the fifth Falcon in the last seven years to earn the Mountain West Conference Senior Recognition Award.
Men's Swimming
The men's swimming and diving team went 3-1 in dual action, including 2-0 in WAC duals. At the 2021 WAC Championships, Air Force finished second with 643 points. The Falcons won seven events overall at the Championships, while also setting two new school records and achieving eight new top-10 program times. AF also had seven NCAA B cuts.
Men's/Women's Diving
The men's and women's diving team had the same dual records as their swimming counterparts. Freshman Kinzie Etzelmiller was named to the Mountain West all-conference team after placing seventh on the platform dive at the 2021 MW Championships. On the men's side, Cole Armagost had a solid WAC Championship, as he placed second on the 1-meter, third on the 3-meter, and runner-up on the platform. Both divers then qualified for the NCAA Zone E meet.
Wrestling
The wrestling team went 2-5 in dual action. One of the dual wins came over #21 Northern Colorado, the first ranked win for the Falcons since 2002. Air Force placed 11th at the Big 12 Championships and placed three individuals at their respective weight classes, as freshman Wyatt Hendrickson took third at heavyweight, senior Cody Surratt placed sixth at 174, and sophomore Cody Phippen took seventh at 125. The Falcons went on to qualify three wrestlers for the 2021 NCAA Championships, Surratt, Hendrickson, and junior Jared Van Vleet. The three Falcons at a single NCAA Championships were the most for the program since sending four in 2014.
Baseball
(As of May 24) Air Force (24-21, 16-15 MW) is in the midst of one of the greatest seasons in program history. The Falcons have set a program record for conference wins in a season and if AF finishes .500 or above in MW play, it would mark the best MW winning percentage ever. The Falcons are also fourth in the conference standings, tying the 2002 team for best in program history. AF has swept three conference series for the first time in program history. The Falcons have two wins over top-15 teams (#7 LSU and #13 Arizona) for the first time since 2010. AF has been ranked in the top-50 in NCAA RPI for a majority of the season. The Falcon offense ranks in the top-100 in eight offensive categories nationally, including top-five in doubles/game.
Lacrosse
Air Force lacrosse concluded the 2021 season with a 4-9 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the league. The Falcons made their fourth Southern Conference Tournament appearance in five seasons with the league. Air Force will be moving to the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2022. Three Falcons earned SOCON post-season honors in all-SOCON first-team selection Quentin Carlile, second-team selection Brenden Crouse. Ethan Grandolfo earned an All-Freshmen team nod for achievements in the cancelled 2020 campaign.
Women's Tennis
Air Force women's tennis posted a 12-7 record in dual matches. The Falcons tied a program record with four wins in Mountain West play. The Falcons notched its 12th consecutive winning season, currently the longest streak at the Academy. Air Force won at home against Wyoming for its second-straight win in the series for the first time ever. The Falcons also defeated Nevada for the first time ever.
Men's Tennis
Air Force men's tennis posted an 8-10 record in dual matches. Air Force's signature win came against San Diego State, which was the first over the Aztecs since 1989. The Falcons were one of the top doubles teams in the Mountain West, compiling a conference-best 6-1 team record in doubles points. Seniors Paul Hendrix and Jamie Bautista capped solid four-year careers with their second-career All-MW doubles team honor and All-MW singles honor for Hendrix.
Men's and Women's Track and Field
(AS OF MAY 19) The Air Force track and field team is in the midst of another strong season, with seven Academy records, six Mountain West titles, two NCAA Indoor All-Americans, and 11 currently on-pace to qualify to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Although the Mountain West cancelled its indoor championship meet, the men finished second at the outdoor meet (women ninth) and won the Championships at the Peak – a 16-team indoor meet that included athletes from several nationally-ranked teams. The men also won the Air Force Invitational (indoor) and picked up a third-place finish against their counterparts from the Pac-12 at the West Coast Classic (outdoor).
