Kyle Westmoreland, a 2014 USAFA graduate, will compete in the 121st U.S. Open Championship, June 17-20, at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. Westmoreland is the first Academy graduate to compete in the U.S. Open and the first to ever play in one of the PGA's four major championships.
Westmoreland qualified after shooting a seven-under-par 135 at the qualifier at the Dallas Athletic Club, May 25. After an opening round 72 (+2) on the Blue Course, Westmoreland came back with a nine-under 63 on the par 72 Gold Course on the final day. In the second round, he posted four birdies and an eagle on the front nine for a six-under 29. Four more birdies on the back completed his round of 63, tying him for fourth overall at the qualifier.
The U.S. Open is Westmoreland's third PGA Tour event. He earned a sponsor's exemption to the 2020 Phoenix Open and the 2019 Military Tribute at Greenbriar. Westmoreland, who fulfilled his military commitment, also competed on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019.
Westmoreland is one of the most decorated Air Force Academy golfers in school history. A native of Katy, Texas, he earned all-region honors as a senior and competed in the NCAA Regionals twice. As a senior, he placed fourth at the Mountain West Championships, the highest finish for an Air Force golfer since 1985, and was named the Academy's most valuable male athlete.
