Falcons drop season opener at Denver

DENVER, Colo.- The Falcons 2021 season opener did not unravel as planned, as the ladies suffered a 5-0 defeat on the road at Denver University. Trailing 1-0 entering the second-half, the Falcons surrendered four goals in the match's final 45 minutes, as Coach Friend's team had a difficult time managing the Pioneers' in the final-third of the pitch.

"Tonight's performance was unacceptable," said Friend. "We are better than that, but you can't win at this level if you are inconsistent. We need to move on and get ready for Sunday."

Air Force and Denver began the game trading possession at the midfield, though the Pioneers were more dynamic on the offensive end. At the 18-minute mark, a DU throw-in into the box was not cleared, as an unmarked Pioneer was able to sneak a shot past Falcons keeper Cammi Bych for the opening score. The Falcons were on their heels for most of the initial 45 minutes, but the game was still within striking distance at the half, as the score remained 1-0.

The second-half saw the Falcons pay for their defensive woes, as Air Force looked out of sorts, allowing DU attackers to run free. The Pioneers scored back-to-back goals in the 56th and 57th minute to jump out to a 3-0 lead, doing the same in the 75th and 76th minute, as the score eventually reached its 5-0 conclusion.

The Falcons are now 0-1 (0-0) on the young season, and 0-2 in Colorado Cup play, as the 2-0 exhibition loss against Colorado counts towards Cup standings. Air Force will return to Denver for a neutral site matchup with Northern Colorado on Sunday, August 22 with kickoff scheduled for 5 pm MT.
