Mac Russ Named MW Freshman of the Week

Russ helped the Falcons to a perfect 2-0 weekend at the Mile High Invitational.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following a stellar weekend of action with the Air Force volleyball team, Mac Russ was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week, the league office announced this morning (Sept. 20). Russ is the 13th different Falcon to earn a weekly honor from the conference – and the first Falcon to claim the newly-created Freshman of the Week award.
Russ helped the Falcons to victories over Iowa and Incarnate Word during a perfect 2-0 weekend at the Mile High Invitational on Sept. 17-18, hitting .340 (15-4-32) in the two matches and averaging 1.14 blocks per set.
The first-year Falcon was on the front line as Air Force held Incarnate Word to negative hitting (-.011) during the easy 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 victory on Sept. 18 and collected six kills on nine swings (no errors) to register a career-best .667 performance and help Air Force hit over .500 as a team (.508) for the first time at the Division I level.
In the thrilling five-set victory over Iowa on Sept. 17, Russ led the Falcons with a career-high eight assisted stops, as the squad out-blocked the much taller Hawkeye team by a 14-8 margin, She also registered personal-best tallies in service aces (two), assists (four) and digs (four), with one of those aces coming during a five-point serving stretch that took Air Force from a 15-20 deficit to a 20-all tie and sparked the Falcons to the a 28-26 victory in the second set.
Russ and her Air Force teammates return to action tomorrow (Sept. 21), when they head to Albuquerque to face New Mexico in the Mountain West opener.
