The Falcons remain unbeaten in Western Athletic Conference play
EDINBURG, Texas – The Falcons extended to their sixth-straight win at UTRGV, posting a 2-1 win in Western Athletic Conference action at UTRGV Soccer Complex. Air Force, still unbeaten in the league, improved to 6-4-2, 5-0 WAC.
The Falcons defense proved too overwhelming for the Vaqueros while the offense capitalized on their attacks. Luke Hill notched the first strike of the match in the 29th minute off a goalie deflection from deep inside the box. The goal marked Hill's first this season.
In the 41st minute, Air Force's defensive pressure led to a scoring opportunity as London Aghedo acquired the ball and connected with Jake Angeletti who redirected to Kobey Stoup in full stride, finishing with a laser just outside of the keeper's reach. Aghedo and Angeletti were tabbed with assists in the goal.
Aghedo, the squad's leading defender, did not return in the second half. Falcon defenders Wills Burns, Matt Benson, Jake Chaffetz, Nick Bourgeois, and Stoup rose to the occasion to fend the Vaqueros off. UTRGV had a jolt of life in the 83rd minute as Kgodiso Sukati notched a goal from the set piece service from Yusuf Cueceoglu. Undeterred, the stout Falcon defense denied the equalizer and won the possessions in the waning minutes.
At the final horn, both teams took eight shots; however, AF took five on goal to UTRGV's three. Senior goalie John Byszewski earned his sixth straight win in cage, making a pair of saves on the evening.
The Falcons return to action on Sunday, October 23, at Houston Christian. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT at Sorrels Field.
