Air Force men's water polo (20-8, 1-3 WWPA) fell at #13 UC San Diego (11-10, 6-0 WWPA) 12-7 in a WWPA game Friday night at Canyonview Aquatic Center in La Jolla, Calif. Senior utility Grant Snyder notched a hat-trick with three goals and an assist for four points to set the Air Force single-season record for most points in a season.
The four points by Snyder gave him 148 for the season, surpassing the previous record of 145, set by Ben Phillips 50 years ago in 1972. Snyder, who was announced as one of 20 players on the Cutino Award Watch list for the best college water polo player yesterday, entered the game leading the nation in points.
It was an uphill game from the start for the Falcons, who were held scoreless in the opening quarter. Down 2-0 after the first quarter, Air Force out-scored the Tritons 4-3 in the second quarter to pull to within one at 5-4 at halftime.
UCSD took control of the game in the third quarter with a 4-1 scoring advantage to go ahead 9-5. The Falcons were able to score just two goals in the fourth.
Junior Ian Christie also added four points with one goal and a team-best three assists. Sophomore Jacob Yi notched a hat-trick with three goals. Senior AJ notched eight saves in goal.
Air Force returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 22, against Concordia University. The game begins at 6 pm PT at Beckman High School in Irvine, Calif.
