COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Air Force ended its 2022 season with an exclamation, snapping an 11-match losing streak to Colorado College with a 1-0 win to claim the inaugural City for Champions Cup at Weidner Field.
"The future of this program is bright, and I'm glad we could end the season on a high note," said head coach Laura Busby.
Air Force wasted little time finding the scoreboard, as freshman Caeli Sherman notched her fourth goal of the season in the 6th minute. Sherman found space about 15 yards outside the penalty box, promptly unloading a picturesque right-footed strike into the top left corner of the net.
Over 90 minutes, the Falcons out-shot the Tigers 13-12, and 7-3 in regards to shots on goal. Given Colorado College's need to find a goal in the second-half and the Tigers considerable offensive pressure, the Falcons were constantly on their own side of the pitch over the final 45 minutes. Even so, Coach Busby's team still managed to produce five shots in the second-half to Colorado College's six.
The Falcons refused to break on defense, routinely clearing the ball from striking distance over a pressure-packed second-half.
Thursday marked the final game for the Falcons senior class, a proper farewell to captain Kayla Milford, Faith Lee, Jennifer McFadden, Juliana McKean and Cam Karras.
"A huge thank you to our seniors for their relentless work ethic and the leadership they provided throughout their careers," said Busby. "We will carry on their legacy and I have no doubt we will be in the playoffs next year."
Air Force ends the season 3-0-2 over its final five games, as Busby's seven wins in 2022 become the most by a first-year coach in program history. The win also represents the Falcons first victory over the Tigers since 2003.
"I'd also like to thank our entire administration for their support tonight, and all season, as well as my staff for all the work they put in this season."
