Air Force Fends off California Baptist, 2-1

USAF ACADEMY – Air Force rallied to a late goal to secure a home win against Western Athletic Conference opponent California Baptist, 2-1, Friday evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Falcons, now on a four-match win streak, improve to 4-4-2 with a perfect 3-0 mark in the conference.

The first strike of the match came in the ninth minute as AF assists leader Jacob Angeletti dodged two defenders and skipped the ball through the legs of a third defender to Falcon goals leader Thaddaeus Dewing in stride deep who finished up-and-over the keeper to the left side net. The assist marked Angeletti's third this season while the goal is Dewing's seventh.

California Baptist responded with an equalizer in the 32^nd minute as Arthur Martinez scored via touches from Uly Martinez and Bryan Iliohan. At the half, the Falcons were outshooting the Lancer, 5-2.

The defensive battle continued well into the second half until about the 70^th minute where the Falcon press proved to be too much for the CBU offense who was struggling to create opportunities. In the 87^th minute, Dewing took a shot on goal from point-blank via service from Angeletti's corner kick. The shot deflected off CBU goalie Nolan Premack directly into the boot of Federico Mion who notched the game-winner. The goal marked Mion's second this season.

Tyler Johnson, Jake Chaffetz, London Aghedo and Mion each clocked 90 minutes of action on the pitch, holding the Lancers to just three shots on the match. Senior keeper John Byszewski earned his fourth-straight win with a save to his credit.

"From the about 70^th to the 90^th minute we dominated," head coach Doug Hill said. "The best thing was that our press was working very well, and they didn't have an answer for it while our foot was on the pedal. Credit to our defensive mids who did a great job pushing up and keeping the pressure on them. We could have been a little bit better at connecting passes and getting more crosses with quality finishes, but we'll take the win and being 3-0 in conference means everything going into the fourth match on Sunday."

Next up, the Falcons return to Cadet Soccer Stadium to play host to Utah Valley, Sunday (Oct. 9), at 1 p.m.
