Air Force will race against its regional counterparts on Friday, Nov. 11, in Albuquerque.
The Air Force cross country team returns to action this weekend, as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for the NCAA Mountain Regional on Friday, Nov. 11. The Falcons' lineup, which includes the fifth-ranked men and a women's team that's receiving votes, will face a stacked field of their regional counterparts for a chance to qualify to the NCAA Championships.
MEET INFORMATION
The NCAA Mountain Regional will be contested at UNM North Golf Course (corner of Yale Blvd and Tucker Rd) in Albuquerque. The women will kick off this year's regional with a 6K race at 11:00 a.m. (MT), while the men will follow with their first 10K of the year at noon. Live results will be available via Record Timing and a direct link is available on the team's schedule page at GoAirForceFalcons.com.
COURSE INFORMATION
At an elevation of 5085 feet, UNM North Golf Course features a spectator-friendly course that winds over grassy slopes. A majority of the Falcons' lineup competed on this course last year, as UNM North hosted the 2021 Mountain West Championships.
WEATHER WATCH
The projected forecast for Friday in Albuquerque is sunny, with a high of 50 and a low of 27.
SCOUTING THE WOMEN IN THE MOUNTAIN REGION
Five of the top nine teams in the women's national standings are from the Mountain Region, including No. 2 New Mexico, No. 4 Northern Arizona, No. 6 BYU, No. 8 Colorado and No. 9 Utah. The field also includes No. 20 Colorado State, No. 27 Utah Valley, three teams that are receiving votes (Utah State, Wyoming, Air Force) and teams from Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Texas Tech, UTEP and Weber State.
SCOUTING THE MEN IN THE MOUNTAIN REGION
Three of the top five teams in the men's national rankings reside in the Mountain Region, including No. 2 BYU, No. 3 Northern Arizona and No. 5 Air Force. The regional lineup also features No. 9 Colorado, No, 21 Montana State, No. 28 Colorado State, a Utah State team that is receiving votes, and squads from Idaho State, Montana, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Southern Utah, Texas Tech, Utah Valley, UTEP, Weber State and Wyoming.
HOW IT WORKS
The regional meet serves as the primary feeder into the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships. The top two teams from each of the nine regional sites – West, Mountain, Midwest, South Central, Great Lakes, South, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast – as well as the top four individuals not on an advancing team, will receive an automatic berth into the national meet, while the remaining teams are chosen by the NCAA Division I Cross Country Committee on an at-large basis from across the country.
MEN HOLD STEADY AT NO. 5
The men remained at No. 5 in the post-conference edition of the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll, which was released on Nov. 1. The Falcons accumulated 285 points to hold onto their program-record ranking for the second-straight week.
THE NEXT COURSE
The 2022 season wraps up next Saturday (Nov. 19), when the top teams in the nation converge on the OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla., for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The official list of qualifiers will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show on NCAA.com at 5:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Nov. 12.
