RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Top-seeded Air Force closed the 2022 campaign on a loss in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals to fifth-seeded California Baptist, 2-0, Friday evening at CBU Soccer Complex. The Falcons finalize their season at 8-6-3 overall with a regular season conference title under the belt.
California Baptist (10-6-3) dictated the pace as they controlled the possessions and kept the ball in their attacking half. The Falcons, held scoreless for the first time since September 2, had opportunities to score but was narrowly out of sync when chances were taken. Air Force seemed unable to find an offensive rhythm for the entire 90 minutes.
Junior goalie Jakob Stone was solid in goal as he kept the match scoreless for the first half despite CBU taking eight first-half shots. Stone athletically fended off three shots on target in the opening 45. The keeper could only do so much as the CBU onslaught persisted, giving up the first goal to Bryan Iliohan in the 55th minute via touches from Georg Bjarnason and Lincoln Aquino.
In the 65th minute CBU's Leo Mendez tacked on an insurance goal via assists from Iliohan and Aquino.
At the sound of the final horn, the Falcons attempted five shots with only two coming on goal. Jacob Angeletti led AF with a pair of shots while Elijah Bussey and Nick Bisagno recorded the shots on goal. CBU finished the match with 17 shots, seven on target.
The Lancers will take on second-seeded San Jose State in the finals on Sunday. Air Force will officially bring the season to a close at the annual awards banquet this Fall.
