COLLEGE STATION, Texas- In the second day of competition at the Art Adamson Invitational, a familiar face rewrote his name into the Air Force record book following a dazzling Thursday performance.
Wen Zhang placed second in the 200Y Free, though his silver finish will certainly feel more like gold. The senior concluded the race with a time of 1:31.99, besting his own school and Western Athletic Conference record of 1:32.21.
The winner of the race, Alabama's Charlie Hawke, touched out Zhang at 1:31.92, as Hawk and Zhang now own the top-two times in the 200Y Free in NCAA competition this season.
"It was a great day for us, obviously highlighted by Wen," said head coach Rob Clayton. "(The 200Y Free) was the race of the night. It came down to the touch. But we had a lot of great swims. Overall, we're a little ahead of where we were a year ago in terms of where are times are."
Many of the Falcon swimmers improved on season-best times. Gharrett Brockman completed the 400Y IM in 3:57.57, smashing his previous-best time of 4:16.92. Camden Swigart placed 12th in the event after concluding the race at 3:56.03, clearing his previous season best time by 10 seconds. Joseph Moore also improved on his previous benchmark, crafting a 10 second improvement with a preliminary round time of 3:58.30.
John Plutt (48.20) and Andrew Armbruster (48.31) scored season-best marks in the 100Y Butterfly as well to improve their standing in the WAC. Grant Afman entered Thursday with the fourth-best time in conference in the 100Y Fly, owning a 49.92. He improved upon that time with a 12th place finish, ending the race at 47.78.
"It was a very positive day against incredible competition," said Clayton. "We're really having a great meet and doing a great job. I'm very proud of the guys."
Air Force is scheduled to conclude its time at the Art Adamson Invitational tomorrow, as the preliminary rounds will begin at 8:30 am MT as the final rounds will resume at 4:30 pm MT.
