A record breaking night for senior running back Brad Roberts and a standout effort by the defensive unit led to Air Force (9-3, 5-3 MW) winning at San Diego State, 13-3, Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif. The win snapped a nine-game skid against the Aztecs (7-5, 5-3 MW) and was the first win in San Diego since 2008.
Roberts carried 35 times for a career-high 187 yards, for his school-record 10th game over 100 yards this season. He set school season records for most yards rushing (1,612) and carries (308), surpassing his own record of 298 carries in 2021 and the previous record of 1,494 yards done by quarterback Beau Morgan in 1996.
Air Force got on the scoreboard first, as Roberts carried all five times on a 75-yard drive touchdown drive to open the game. Highlighting the drive was a 63-yard run by Roberts and the two-yard touchdown run.
The Falcons held the Aztecs scoreless in the first half to take a 7-0 lead into the lockers at the half.
Air Force got its second score in the third quarter off a SDSU fumble, capped by a 30-yard field goal by Matthew Dapore. On its opening drive to start the second half, the Aztecs botched a snap exchange deep in their own territory and defensive lineman Peyton Zdroik pounced on the ball at the SDSU 13.
San Diego State got on the scoreboard on its ensuing drive to make it a 10-3 game. After a big kickoff return, the Aztecs capped a six-play, 31-yard drive with a 26 yard field goal by Jack Browning. The Falcon defense prevented a touchdown by making a third-down stop and forced SDSU into the field goal.
Air Force tacked on another field goal in the fourth quarter for the final score of the game. The Falcons chewed up six minutes off the clock, driving 54 yards down the field and ending with a 32 yard field goal by Dapore with 9:03 to play.
Air Force's defense continued to hold the SDSU offense at bay in the fourth quarter with two interceptions in the endzone. The first was by junior safety Jayden Goodwin. The final nail in the coffin came by junior safety Trey Taylor's pick.
Air Force held San Diego State to 187 yards of offense and forced three turnovers. The Falcons held SDSU to minus one-yard rushing, the fewest allowed in a game since 2002. The three points allowed was the fewest scored by the Aztecs in the history of the 38-game series.
Air Force racked up 271 yards on the ground and completed one pass for 14 yards.
