PHOENIX, Ariz.- Owning a three-point lead heading into Saturday's finale, Air Force saw its lead evaporate en route to a narrow 179-174 loss.
"It was a hard loss today," said head coach Rob Clayton. "We had some great swims, and then in several places in the meet, we just gave it away."
After a stellar Friday evening, Wen Zhang swam just as well on Saturday. The senior was the victor in the 1000Y Free, as his time of 9:33.46 was more than 13 seconds ahead of the next swimmer. Zhang also raced to a first-place finish in the 50Y Free (20.46) and the 200Y Free (1:38.83).
Andrew Armbruster picked up another first-place title, this time in the 200Y Fly with a time of 1:52.13. Gabriel Bartolomei's time of 51.37 in the 100Y Backstroke was also good for the top spot in the event.
Tory Bartlett earned four points with a second-place time of 56.72 in the 100Y Breaststroke. Joseph Moore also managed four points in the 200Y Individual Medley, clocking in at 1:54.38, just a tenth of a second behind GCU's Jonathan Rom.
Alex Kenyon posted a score far and ahead of the next diver in the three-meter, winning the event with a score of 323.70.
"We had chance, after chance, after chance," said Clayton. "We just didn't do the little things right in order to win."
Air Force will have some time to recalibrate, as the Falcons will next compete at the Art Adamson Invitational on the campus of Texas A&M with action starting Wednesday, November 16.
