GREENSBORO, N.C.- All four of the participating Falcons hit the pool in the Friday portion of the Toyota U.S. Open, as Air Force took advantage of the national spotlight.
Both Wen Zhang (200m Freestyle) and Thomas Nagle (100m Breaststroke) swam to strong times in their respective preliminary rounds to compete in the afternoon final rounds.
Zhang's heat time of 1:50.23 was 8th among the 55 swimmers in the field, leading to placement in the championship final round. Zhang proceeded to finish eighth in the 200m Freestyle Finals, though his time of 1:49.60 grants him an invite to the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at Lucas Oil Stadium in the summer of 2024.
Nagle's preliminary swim allowed him to swim in the consolation finals of the 100m Breaststroke, where the sophomore clocked in at 1:03.75 for a seventh-place finish.
In the 100m Butterfly, Grant Afman and Andrew Armbruster made their first appearances of the weekend. Armbruster placed 43rd with a time of 56.12, while Afman was just behind his teammate with a time of 56.35. Neither swimmer qualified for a finals swim.
The Falcons will wrap up their time in Greensboro tomorrow, as Zhang is scheduled to race in the 100m Freestyle, while Nagle is set to compete in the 200m Breaststroke.
