FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 4, 2022) – The Air Force Falcons and Baylor Bears have officially accepted invitations to play in the 2022 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl. Air Force is making its sixth appearance in the game, the most by any school, and its first since 2015. Baylor is playing in the bowl for the first time and is the first Big 12 Conference team to participate since Kansas in 2005.
The 20th anniversary of the bowl game will be played Thursday, Dec. 22 at TCU's Amon G. Carter Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. The two institutions have met three times previously, but not since 1977. Baylor won all three previous meetings.
"We are very pleased to announce that Air Force and Baylor will compete in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl's 20th anniversary game," Executive Director Brant Ringler said. "It is going to be a special celebration, and we are excited that we will have two very deserving, proud programs joining us in Fort Worth."
Air Force completed the regular season with a 9-3 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons enter the bowl game riding a season-long four-game winning streak. Air Force leads the nation in rushing at 330.9 yards per game, picking up 5.4 yards per carry.
The nine-win season is the 15th in program history and the seventh under head coach Troy Calhoun, who is in his 16th year. This is the program's 29th all-time bowl appearance and its 12th in the last 16 years. Last year, the Falcons secured a 31-28 victory over Louisville at the First Responder Bowl in Dallas.
Baylor finished the 2022 regular season with a 6-6 overall mark, including a 4-5 record in the Big 12. Its wins included victories over bowl-bound teams Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Kansas. Baylor averaged 33.6 points per game on the year and topped the 40-point plateau on four occasions.
The Bears are headed to a bowl game for the 27th time in school history and are bowl-bound for the 11th time since 2010. Baylor has won four of its last five postseason contents. Third-year head coach Dave Aranda guided the Bears to a 21-7 victory over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl a year ago.
Since 2014, the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl is the second highest scoring of the more than three dozen bowl games in the nation with a total of 557 points. Only the Rose Bowl Game (587) has had more points scored.
The annual bowl game in Fort Worth began in 2003 and has featured the "armed forces" theme since 2006. It was the first collegiate football bowl game to host all three U.S. Military Academy football teams – Air Force (2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2022), Army West Point (2010, 2017, 2018, 2021) and Navy (2013, 2016). Patriotic overtones recognizing all six branches of the service are prevalent throughout the game. This marks the 12th time in the past 16 years that the game has featured an academy team.
