U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force freshman Scott Rockett won the NCAA Air Rifle championship on the final day of the NCAA Championships, Saturday, March 12, at the Air Force Academy's Clune Arena.
Rockett shot a 250.2 in the finals to become the first NCAA air rifle national champion in school history. Rockett reached the finals after shooting a 598 in the team competition to tie for first.
Kentucky won its second straight NCAA Rifle Championship with an aggregate score of 4739. TCU was second (4736), followed by Alaska (4733), Ole Miss (4713), Air Force (4712), West Virginia (4700), Murray State (4687) and Navy (4681). Kentucky won the smallbore championship (2360) while TCU won the air rifle (2386).
"We went into nationals in fourth place and shot very good in smallbore to maintain that ranking," head coach Launi Meili said. "Today, was a struggle for the team as a whole in air rifle. We came in fifth by one point so that stung. I think the team telegraphed all their good shots Scott's way and he had a phenomenal day. He shot a 598 in the match, just one point off of his career high and then just killed it in the final against the top eight individual air rifle shooters in the nation. He led the final from start to finish and beat an Olympic silver medalist to become USAFA's first air rifle national champion."
Rockett finished fifth overall with an aggregate score of 1185. Kentucky's Mary Tucker won the aggregate with a score of 1191. Rockett was the top Falcon in smallbore with an 1185 on Friday. Kreb was second in smallbore at 1177. Rockett's 598 in the air rifle team competition was tied as the top score. Freshman Lauren Hurley shot 594, Kreb shot 590, Peninah D'Souza shot 588 and Devin Schwindt shot 586.
