DETROIT – After hard fought matches in Session III, Wyatt Hendrickson concluded his stellar 2021-22 campaign at the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Friday afternoon, in Little Caesars Arena. Hendrickson, a two-time NCAA qualifier and Division I's Most Dominant Wrestler, finalized his season at 26-2. Senior teammate Sidney Flores (18-14) concluded the tournament yesterday going 1-2. Flores finalizes his Air Force stint with 54 career wins.
In his first consolation match of the day, Hendrickson took on 22-seed AJ Nevills of South Dakota State. Hendrickson got to work early, scoring four points in the first period via takedown and two near fall points. The Falcon extended his lead in the second period as he added two more take downs and another two-point near fall. Nevills managed an escape point, closing the second period trailing 10-1. Hendrickson scored his final take down in the third period and tacked on a riding time point for a 13-1 major decision—his second bonus point victory of the tournament.
Hendrickson concluded his tear through the heavyweight division with 23 bonus-point wins on the season.
In his final match of Session III, Hendrickson met up with returning All-American (13) Tate Orndorff of Ohio State. Hendrickson was the first to strike with a take down, quickly met with an Orndorff escape point. In a scramble gone awry, Orndorff secured a take down with four back points, extending to a 7-2 lead to close the first period. The Buckeye started on bottom in the second period, quickly escaping. Hendrickson scored his second take down of the bout, met again with an Orndorff escape. The score was 9-4 in favor of Orndorff heading into the final period. Hendrickson started on the bottom position and spent most of the period mounting an escape, running out of time to mount a comeback. At the final whistle the match was finalized at 9-5.
The Falcons will officially bring the 2021-22 season to a close at the annual awards banquet this Spring.
