Maddie Lloyd Makes History at Wing Open

Lloyd, the first female to win four Wing Open titles, was one of two four-time champs on Friday.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – History was made at the 65th Wing Open Championships this evening (March 4), as senior Maddie Lloyd became the first female boxer in Air Force history to win four-straight Wing Open titles. Lloyd was one of two Falcons to become a four-time champion during tonight's special edition of Friday Night Fights, as classmate Lawrence Barrett became the 17th member of the men's team to win four consecutive titles.
Lloyd, who entered the night with two titles at 139 pounds and one at 132 pounds, completed her Wing Open collection with her another 132-pound championship, after earning a decision over freshman Peyton Glenn. Lloyd took control of the contest at the opening bell, forcing her opponent into a standing-eight less than 15 seconds in the bout and not allowing Glenn to gain any offensive traction. The pace slowed slightly in the second round, but Lloyd continued to pressure her younger foe and kept her against the ropes for the majority of the third round. With tonight's victory, Lloyd became the first female to win four-straight Wing Open titles since Air Force added women to the card in 2015.
The men's list of four-time champions also grew by one on Friday, as Barrett claimed his fourth-straight title at 125-pounds, following a decision over junior Jordan Dutcher. Barrett came out strong, forcing Dutcher into an early standing-eight and then keeping him along the ropes. He forced the referee to another eight-count in the second round and held off a late stand by Dutcher to claim the decision.
Although the men's boxing program has 57 more years of competition than the women, the elusive list of four-time champions is still relatively small. Barrett is just the 17th Academy boxer to claim a Wing Open title during every year at the Academy.
Junior Tyler Dalzell received the Clune Outstanding Boxer Award following his early victory over sophomore Nile Owens – a former member of the Falcons' lacrosse team – in the 147-pound final. After a hard-hitting opening round, Dalzell forced Owens into a pair of standing eights in the second and put an exclamation point on the round with a hard shot as time expired. Owens opened the third with several jabs of his own, but Dalzell had too much power, causing another eight-count at the 45-second mark and forcing the referee to stop the bout with 40 seconds remaining. It is the second-straight title for Dalzell, who won the division by decision as a sophomore.
Fellow junior Alan Long also defended his Wing Open title by referee stoppage, as he downed sophomore Keillan Laurenceau in the second round to repeat as the 165-pound champion. Long, last year's Clune Award winner, came out fast and applied heavy pressure to Laurenceau, forcing the referee to intervene twice in the second round, before ultimately calling a stop to the contest.
Following a switch in weight classes after not competing at the Wing Open last spring, two Falcons reclaimed their spot on the team's Wall of Champions with victories this evening. Senior Maksat Omar, the 139-pound champion in 2020, captured the 132-pound title this year after earning a referee-stopped victory (third round) over sophomore Dylan West – a former Academy gymnast, while senior team captain Zach Phillips, who won the 147-pound title two years ago, stopped sophomore Josh Payton from being a repeat champion at 139 pounds after earning the judges' vote in his contest against the defending champ at that weight class. Senior Sam Thompson, a champion at 156 pounds (2020) and a finalist at 139 pounds (2021), remained in the lower weight division this year and picked up her second Wing Open title after taking a decision from junior Brooke Martin – the Cadet-in-Charge of the rugby team and Thompson's 156-pound opponent from two years ago.
Senior Ayaz Mustafa, a two-time finalist at 147 pounds, captured his first Wing Open title after earning a split decision over freshman Luke Kohout – the only freshman on the men's side to advance to the final – in the 156-pound bout, while sophomore Leo Camacho, a 125-pound finalist last year, claimed the 119-pound championship this year following a hard-hitting bout with freshman Andrew Lu in the night's opening contest. Sophomore Jacob Mendoza rounded out the list of men's champions, as he claimed a unanimous decision over 2021 finalist Joe Wilson at 185 pounds.
Back on the women's side, sophomore Mack Lucas, a 2021 finalist at 156 pounds, claimed her first Wing Open title after decisioning classmate Katie Bush in the 147-pound championship, while junior Hannah Schuster defeated freshman Shelby Paul for this year's 156-pound title in the card's only matchup featuring boxers from the same cadet squadron (CS-15).
In addition to the champions that were decided tonight in the ring, several other Falcons were recognized as Wing Open champions based on walkovers or an earlier contested final. Junior Walker Morris, unopposed at 195 pounds, captured his first title at that weight class – and his third overall after winning the last two 185-pound championships, while sophomore Victor Benitez earned his first title in the heavyweight division. On the women's side, junior Susan Yeung (112 pounds), sophomore Cat Tak (119 pounds) and freshman Cassidy Rosa (125 pounds) earned their first Wing Open titles by walkovers, while junior Allyah Marlett won the 165-pound title following her championship bout last week.
Tonight's winners will form the core of the team that will represent the Academy in the National Collegiate Boxing Association postseason, which begins next week (March 10-12) at the Western Regional in Reno.
