No. 4 Air Force hosts NCAA Rifle Championships, March 11-12

This Week: The Air Force Academy will host the 2022 NCAA Rifle Championships, March 11-12. The smallbore championship will be on Friday, March 11, in the Cadet Gym Rifle Range. The air rifle competition will be held on Saturday, March 12, in Clune Arena.
The Field: Air Force is joined in the NCAA Championship field by Alaska, Kentucky, Murray State, Navy, Ole Miss, TCU and West Virginia.

5:30 pm – Individual smallbore finals

About the Championships: The co-ed tournament features the top eight NCAA rifle teams, along with the next highest scoring individuals that are not part of the competing teams. The NCAA Rifle Championship was established in 1980 and this season marks the third time the Academy has hosted (1996 and 2006). Kentucky won the 2021 NCAA Championship, hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, while Air Force finished eighth. For more information on NCAA Rifle, please visit www.ncaa.com/sports/rifle.
Air Force in the NCAAs: Air Force will compete in the NCAA Rifle Championships for the eighth straight season and the 20th time overall. The Falcons placed eighth at last season's NCAA Championships. Air Force was selected to compete in the 2020 NCAA Championship, but the event was cancelled due to COVID. Air Force's highest finish ever came in 1995 and 1996 with a pair of second-place finishes. In 2019, Air Force won the air rifle national title and placed third overall.
About the Falcons: After shooting two of the top scores of the season in Fort Worth, Feb. 17-19, the Air Force rifle team is ranked fourth in the nation with a three-score combined average of 9454.67. Alaska is first followed by defending national champion Kentucky and TCU. The Falcons' top three scores were the season-high 4736 at TCU, a 4717 at the Academy earlier in the season and a 4715 at TCU.
Air Force is one of the top air rifle teams in the nation, recording two of the top eight scores this season. The Falcons shot a 2388 on Feb. 7 at the Academy and a 2386 on Feb. 18 at TCU. In air rifle, Air Force sophomore Peninah D'Souza and freshman Lauren Hurley have each scored a perfect 600. Only seven shooters in the nation have hit that mark this season. Freshman Scott Rockett has shot 599 five times while sophomore Morgan Kreb has also hit that same mark. Rockett holds the team's top aggregate score of 1190 against TCU, Feb. 19. Rockett has the team's top smallbore score of 593, against TCU, Feb. 17.
