USAFA, Colo.- The Falcons took care of business in their 2022 regular season debut, taking down Northern Iowa 48-17.
Sixteen rushers combined for 582 yards on the ground, including five rushing scores. Quarterback Haaziq Daniels, who was relieved by Jensen Jones late in the 3rd quarter, finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with 109 passing yards and a touchdown. The senior also accounted for 107 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Fullback Brad Roberts led the Falcons with 114 rushing yards on just eight carries, highlighted by a 71-yard touchdown run to secure his 10th-career game with 100+ yards on the ground.
Dane Kinamon had just one catch, but his lone reception went for 80 yards and a touchdown on the Falcons' opening drive. The junior also managed 77 yards and a score in his two rushing attempts, with his 157 all-purpose yards leading all players.
Northern Iowa moved the ball early, but the Falcon defense was tenacious, recording a pair of key turnovers.
Junior safety Camby Goff snagged his first-career interception midway through the second quarter, one of Air Force's two forced turnovers. On the Panthers ensuing possession, senior linebacker TD Blackmon forced a fumble at the Falcons' four-yard line, eventually recovered by Michael Mack II.
Trey Taylor led all Falcons with eight tackles, including six solo stops. Blackmon and CJ Boyd also totaled four tackles each. Alex Mock and Jayden Thiergood were each responsible for a tackle for loss.
After forcing a punt on Northern Iowa's opening drive, the Falcons wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. With a bit of improvisation, Daniels scrambled to his left, finding Kinamon open downfield and connecting with the receiver for an 80-yard touchdown strike. The touchdown becomes longest reception of Kinamon's career, and the second-longest touchdown pass for Daniels.
On the second play of the Falcons' second possession, Kinamon struck again, this time finding the endzone after darting through the Panthers defense for a 71-yard touchdown run. The rush stands as the longest of Kinamon's collegiate career.
Kicker Matthew Dapore would connect on a pair of field goals in the second quarter, extending the Falcons lead to 20-3. He has now converted six-consecutive field goal tries.
With 3:31 remaining in the first half and the Panthers driving, Blackmon's forced fumble resulted in Air Force retaking possession at their own four-yard line. The Falcons proceeded to march down the field in 13 plays, covering 96 yards in just over three minutes as Daniels punctuated the opening half with a 12-yard rushing score.
Air Force led 27-3 going into the halftime break.
The quick-strike Falcons needed just two plays out of the locker room to again find the endzone, as Roberts plunged through the middle of the Northern Iowa defense to scamper for 71-yards and a score. The senior's 71-yard touchdown becomes the longest rush of his career.
With the Falcons leading 34-3 midway through the third quarter, quarterback Jensen Jones relieved Daniels in the face of a 3rd & 10 on the UNI 46-yard line. Jones would rush for 15 yards and a first down before eventually sneaking into the endzone for a one-yard score. Jones didn't attempt a pass but racked up 18 yards on four carries. Jensen's rushing score encapsulated a 17-play, 96-yard drive that chewed up nearly 11 minutes of clock.
Jalen Johnson found the endzone for the first time in his career early in the fourth quarter, evading multiple Panthers defenders in route to a 80-yard rushing touchdown.
Next, Air Force hosts in-state foe Colorado on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm MT.
