With the national championship game bringing a close to the 2022 football season, it officially marked one of the most successful seasons in Air Force history. The Falcons finished the season 10-3 overall with a victory over Baylor in the Armed Forces Bowl. The Falcons also won their series-best 21st Commander-in-Chief's Trophy title overall and first since 2016. The Falcons hit the 10-win mark for the third straight full season. Air Force, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Ohio State, Utah and Oregon are the only teams to win 10-plus games the last three full seasons (2019, 2021, 2022).
The Falcons also won a program-record six national statistical titles in 2022. Air Force won its third-straight national rushing title with a 326.7 per-game average, the only team in the nation over 300 yards per game. Air Force is just the second school to win three straight rushing titles and the first since Navy in 2008.
Air Force finished the season with the top-ranked total defense for the first time in program history, allowing just 254.4 yards per game. The Falcons are just the second non-Power 5 team in the last 31 years to win the national title in total defense. Air Force closed the season holding nine opponents to under 300 total yards, including five straight to close the season. The unit was outstanding on third-down, holding its last two opponents, San Diego State and Baylor, to 0-21 on third-down conversions.
The Falcons also won the title for fewest penalty yards per game with just 29.69. Air Force was among the top five all season and were penalized for over 50 yards in a game just once. The Falcons won the national title in yards per completion with a 22.3 average.
Air Force led the nation in time of possession with 36:33 mark to mark the second straight season winning the title. The Falcons won it last year with a 36:35 mark. The offense held the ball for 35-plus minutes in eight games this season, including the final four games.
Senior fullback Brad Roberts won the national title in rushing yards with a school-record 1,728 yards to become the first Falcon to win the national rushing title. Roberts also set school records for carries (345) and 100-yard rushing games (11).
