Hatfield will be recognized during Air Force’s home game against Wyoming
ATLANTA (Oct. 12, 2023) – The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation, PNC Bank and Peach Bowl, Inc. will celebrate legendary Air Force coach Ken Hatfield's 40th anniversary of winning the national coaching award on Oct. 14 at Falcon Stadium during the Falcons' home football game against the Wyoming Cowboys.
The Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank is the most coveted Coach of the Year Award in college football and celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also representing programs with the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership and integrity on and off the field – the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's philosophy.
Coach Hatfield was awarded The Dodd Trophy in 1983 after leading the Falcons to 26 wins in five seasons, including a 10-2 record in 1983, when he guided his team to an Independence Bowl victory over Ole Miss and the program's highest final ranking in 25 years at No. 13.
"It's our honor to be able to celebrate an incredible coach like Ken Hatfield," said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. "We are thrilled to be able to come to Air Force to celebrate his 40th anniversary of winning The Dodd Trophy and the remarkable season the Falcons had in 1983."
"Coach Hatfield was an extraordinary coach for the Falcons during his time at Air Force," said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO & President Gary Stokan. "He helped rebuild the Air Force football program on the field, while also exemplifying what this award truly stands for by developing a culture devoted to scholarship, leadership and integrity."
Since 2014, officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Peach Bowl, Inc. have celebrated the major anniversaries of previous winners of The Dodd Trophy by honoring them during a game on their campus. Coaches such as Vince Dooley (Georgia), Bobby Bowden (Florida State), Bobby Ross (Georgia Tech), Dick Sheridan (NC State), George Welsh (Virginia), Dick MacPherson (Syracuse), Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), Ralph Friedgen (Maryland), Bill Snyder (Kansas State), Lloyd Carr (Michigan) and Bob Stoops (Oklahoma) have all been recognized at their respective schools.
The winner of the 2023 Dodd Trophy Presented by PNC Bank will be announced in Atlanta during bowl week of this year's Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. A panel consisting of all previous winners, national media, a member of the Dodd family and a College Football Hall of Fame member will identify the final list of potential recipients at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
