Falcons Fall to Rams in Conference Finale

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Air Force volleyball team closed out the conference season with a 3-0 setback to Colorado State on Saturday (Nov. 18) night in Moby Arena, falling 19-25, 22-25, 20-25 to the Rams. The Falcons closed out a historic regular season with the most conference wins ever at the Division I level (nine) and an overall win total that equals the most wins ever at the Division I level.
Senior Aaryn Scires led the Falcons with 11 kills, while she and junior Ella Tschuor both hit over .340 on the night (.353 for Tschuor, .346 for Scires). Senior Caroline Reinkensmeyer recorded the 23rd double-double of her career with a team-high 24 assists and 13 digs, while also accounting for the team's two service aces and tying for the team lead in blocks with fellow senior Joi Harvey (two blocks each).
A kill from Harvey got the Falcons out to a quick 2-1 lead, but the Rams responded with five of the next six scores to double-up the Falcons by a 6-3 margin. Tschuor put down a kill to bring the Falcons within one (5-6), while strikes from junior Mac Russ and Harvey kept Air Force within two by the 9-11 mark. A kill from Tschuor broke up a 5-1 run by Colorado State that stretched the Rams' lead to 19-12. Russ put down a kill to halt the run and spark a four-point swing by the Falcons (16-19) that included a kill from senior Savannah Neal and a solo stop from Harvey. Neal and Harvey added kills, but the Rams took the opening set by a 25-19 score.
Reinkensmeyer served up an ace to help the Falcons to a fast 3-1 start in the second, while back-to-back kills from Scires and a strike from Harvey saw Air Force take a 6-3 lead. Scires and Russ teamed up for block (7-4), while a solo stop from Reinkensmeyer put the Falcons in double figures (10-7) and start a 4-0 Air Force run that included a kill and block from Tschuor (assisted by Harvey). After another Tschuor kill pushed the Falcons' lead to six (14-8), the Rams rattled off seven-straight points to take a 15-14 lead. The Falcons stopped the run and the teams traded points, with Reinkensmeyer (18) and Russ (19) accounting for set-tying scores. Tschuor and Scires added kills, but CSU completed the comeback for the 25-22 win.
After giving up two attacking errors to start the third, Colorado State rolled off five-straight points to take a 5-2 lead and send the Falcon into an early timeout. Scires and Russ teamed up to tie the set at six, as they both put down a kill and then teamed up for a block. Colorado State recorded another five-point swing to retake the lead (11-6), before Tschuor and freshman Annamaria Ramos put down a pair of kills at the 9-12 mark. Reinkensmeyer added a kill and served up her second ace, while four CSU errors helped to bring the Falcons within four (15-19) Scires scored the Falcons' final five points, tallying four kills and teaming up with Russ for a block, as the Rams completed the sweep with the 25-20 win.
