Falcons Claim Four Wins Over Army West Point

DENVER – Four members of the Air Force boxing team captured impressive victories over their service academy counterparts from Army West Point this evening (Nov. 3) during a special edition of Friday Night Fights at The Fillmore Auditorium in downtown Denver.
Senior Jacob Mendoza opened the night with a decisive victory, as he claimed a unanimous decision over Aleksandre Jolia in the 180-pound contest, while sophomore newcomer KJ Johnson dominated his 135-pound bout two fights later to put the men up 2-0. Johnson, who earned the night's Outstanding Male Boxer award, came out strong and forced his opponent, Patrick Sucich, into a second-round retirement.
The Falcons capped the night with two more victories, as seniors Joe Wilson and Victor Benitez won the final two fights, including the second retirement of the evening. Wilson controlled his 188-pound bout from the start, forcing Breion Fonoti to abandon the contest in the second round, while Benitez earned a split-decision win in his hard-hitting heavyweight bout with Spencer Roy.
Overall, the men finished 4-3 on the night, as juniors Luke Kohout (156 pounds, Ryan Chi) and Andrew Lu (132 pounds, Emilio Haynes) dropped split decisions in their respective bouts and sophomore Duong Tran lost his 125-pound bout with Dylan Sheriff.
Four members of the women's team also stepped into the ring at The Fillmore on Friday night. Sophomore Chinonye Mbanugo suffered a split decision loss to Lia Stokes, the event's Outstanding Female Boxer, in their 142-pound match-up, while both junior Peyton Glenn (147 pounds, Annika Scott) and senior Mack Lucas (154 pounds, Gabby Nelson) also dropped narrow split decisions and sophomore Alejandra Tirado-Elias' 135-pound bout with Gabi Sorrentino was stopped by the referee.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Nov. 10, when they travel to Nevada for the Reno Invitational.
