BOISE, Idaho -- The Air Force volleyball team notched another 'first' this afternoon (Nov. 4), as it collected its first-ever victory in Bronco Gym during an impressive 3-0 victory over Boise State. Winning in straight 25-22 sets, the Falcons recorded their third-straight Saturday sweep of the conference season.
With the victory, the Falcons earned their seventh Mountain West victory of the year (7-7) – a total that matches the most conference wins by the program at the Division I level. The win is also their 15th overall victory of the season (15-10) – a tally that equals the second-highest win total at the DI level.
Junior Ella Tschuor tallied a team-high 10 kills on .409 hitting (10-1-22), while classmate Mac Russ (.462, 7-1-13) and senior Joi Harvey (.389, 8-1-18) also hit over .380 on the night. Harvey and fellow senior Aaryn Scires tallied a match-high four blocks, with Harvey tallying one of the Falcons' three solo blocks on the day, while Tschuor added half of the team's six service aces. Senior Caroline Reinkensmeyer notched 32 assists and sophomore Jordan Suan rounded out the Falcons' scoring leaders with 10 digs.
Harvey registered the Falcons' first point of the match (1-3), while scores from Russ and freshman Annamaria Ramos tied the set at three. Two more kills by the junior evened the set at six, while Tschuor's first kill gave Air Force a 7-6 lead. Two scores from Harvey and classmate Aaryn Scires (kill/block for Harvey, two blocks for Scires) pushed the Falcons advantage out to 12-14, but Bosie State came back with three-straight scores to retake the lead. The teams traded points, with Air Force accounting for set-tying points at 16 (Russ), 18 (error) and 19 (Tschuor). A service ace from Reinkensmeyer gave Air Force the 20-19 lead, while back-to-back aces from Tschuor pushed the Falcons' lead to 23-20, and kills from Harvey and Scires secured the 25-22 victory.
Tschuor put down the opening kill of the second set, while kills from Reinkensmeyer and Scires contributed to a 5-3 Air Force advantage. The Broncos responded with the next three points, but Air Force retook a two-point lead following back-to-back aces from freshman Sophia Dasilva. The teams continued to trade scores, as Reinkensmeyer tied the set at nine and consecutive kills from Russ and Tschuor contributed to a 12-11 lead for the Falcons. Air Force entered the media timeout trailing 15-13, but Harvey and Ramos put down the Falcons' next four points (kill and solo block for each) during a 4-1 run that gave Air Force an 18-17 lead. The Broncos regained the lead two plays later, but Scires evened the score at 19 and Ramos helped push the Falcons' lead to two (21-19). Boise State pulled within one on three more occasions, but the Falcons recorded the final two scores for another 25-22 win.
Air Force jumped out to a fast 7-1 lead in the third, as an ace from Tschuor and a kill from Harvey helped compliment four attacking errors by the Broncos. Ramos and Russ put the Falcons in double figures with a 10-5 lead, while an additional score from the freshman and two kills from Tschuor gave Air Force a 13-8 advantage. Air Force held a four-point advantage behind kills from Harvey (14-10), Scires (15-11), Reinkensmeyer (16-12) and Russ (17-13), while four errors from the Broncos and two kills from Harvey pushed their lead out to 23-15. Boise State used a furious rally to pull within one at 23-22, but Harvey and Scires stopped the run with a block and an errant attack by the Broncos secured the Falcons third 25-22 victory over the day – its third sweep in the all-time series.
The Falcons return to the Academy next week for their final two home matches of the regular season, as they host Nevada (Nov. 9) and Fresno State (Nov. 11) at Cadet East Gym.
