Air Force Downed By Utah State, 80-65

LOGAN, Utah - Air Force men's basketball (13-14, 4-10 MW) dropped an 80-65 contest at Utah State (20-7, 9-5 MW) in Mountain West action Tuesday night at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Sophomore guard Jake Heidbreder led the Falcons with 16 points and senior Carter Murphy added 13.
Guard Max Shulga led Utah State with a career-high 29 points and center Trevin Dorius added 17 points and seven rebounds.
Air Force stayed close with the Aggies throughout, but were unable to get the shots to go in late in the game. The Falcons shot 38 percent from the field in the second half.
Air Force kept the game close in the first half, responding several times when Utah State tried to take over.
The Aggies jumped ahead 13-4 to start the game by pounding the ball inside. After USU center Trevin Dorius picked up his second foul, the Falcons went on a 12-5 run to cut the lead to two at 18-16 with 11:38 to play.
Utah State pushed the lead back up to 13 with five minutes in the first, before Air Force came back with a 12-7 burst to trail by eight at the half, 40-32.
Heidbreder went 7 of 11 from the field and 2 for 3 from three. Murphy went 6 for 12 from the field in 32 minutes off the bench. a
Freshman forward Rytis Petraitis overcame early foul trouble to score 10 points to go with nine rebounds. Petraitis went 8 of 10 from the line and set the program record for most free throws in a season by a freshman (82).
Air Force's 65 points was the most scored at Utah State since the Aggies joined the Mountain West and the most since scoring 70 against USU in 1978.
Air Force returns to action Friday, Feb. 17, at Wyoming. Tip time is 8 pm MT and the game will be broadcast on the FS1 (Fox Sports 1).
