Air Force Kicks Off Wing Open Tournament This Friday

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – An exciting three-week span of Academy boxing officially kicks off this Friday (Feb. 17), as Air Force begins competition of the 66th Wing Open Tournament. The Wing Open, which began with just four bouts in 1958, has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the cadet schedule.

The tournament gets underway in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room with one quarterfinal bout (men's 165-lbs.: sophomore Robert Marzicola vs Jonathon Watson) and five semifinal contests (women's 112-lbs.: freshman Alexandra Waller vs senior Susan Yeung; women's 147-lbs.: junior Morgan Roberts vs junior Lexi Lee; men's 147-lbs.: freshman Ian Kim vs freshman Jake Edwards; women's 156-lbs.: sophomore Shelby Paul vs junior Katie Bush; men's 185-lbs.: freshman Dylan Barrios vs junior Angelo Ganac), as well as the women's 119-pound championship featuring sophomore Carmyn Grubbs and junior Madigan Starr.

The champions of the Wing Open will form the core of the Air Force squad that will represent the Academy at the upcoming National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) regional and national championship events. For 2023, the NCBA Western Regional will be held in Berkeley, Calif., on March 9-11, while the national championships will be return to Charlotte, N.C., on April 13-15.

Admission is free to the opening two rounds of the Wing Open Tournament, while tickets for the finals, which can be purchased at AFTickets.com, are $8 (military, groups of 10+), $10 (Zone 2) and $15 (Zone 1).
